My not-very-complicated theory (touched on in that video I'm not supposed to talk about) is that his problems all stem from low self-esteem, exacerbated by an adherence to wokeness. No idea what initially sparked the self-esteem thing (some girl called him ugly and he took it way too seriously?), but it could have been resolved if he'd had similarly funny friends and learned to take as well as deliver an insult/joke. (He revealed in that Curtis interview that he struggled to make friends growing up.) As for the wokeness, I imagine his girlfriends are largely responsible there - along with maybe a segment of his audience (whose feedback mattered far too much to him). Regardless, he was captured by an ideology that holds great store in not offending *insert possible joke target here* - which runs entirely counter to his style of humour. So, he cared/cares way too much about what other people think, and because of that he's self-censored to the point of total inertia. And I wouldn't discount a bit of straightforward laziness either.

One thing I'll say in his defence is that modern life is largely shit for a lot of men, and he's far from alone in deciding to no longer play a rigged game. What separates Spoony from most shut-ins is that he has everything he needs to succeed *right there*. He just... won't get back on that horse.
