Why were the Irish looked down in the old USA? I don't know the US history that well, and I don't know much about Irish either (beside the stereotype of drunkards who pick fights and potato memes), but I keep hearing about it, and just saw some comedy sketch about how they didn't hire Irish in the 1850s. Were there any other white nationalities, beside Poles, that were also looked down on?

racism wasnt like the racism we know it as now. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach is a major contributer to viewing black people as what theyb are in terms of modern racism. This was sometime around the late 1700s to early 1800s
so it was likely still catching on.
Even vikings viewed dark skin people as regular people just "blue"
at one point in human history chinese people were considered white. During this time you could literally hate an entire "race" of people for various reasons and not just skin color alone.
You're viewing it through a modern lense and not historical. Think of it like this, jews are white skinned but /pol/ does consider them white they consider them jewish and some jewish people dont consider themselves white they consider themselves jewish. There is also an entire classification system the nazis invented to further classify people based off of their genetics from a base perspective for example: hitler didnt consider himself aryan he considered himself Alpine
