Most of them are discontent with themselves so they attack anyone they perceive as their better. A sizable portion are in the misery loves company group trying to drag people down to their level.

when I was a kid we grew up throwrng rocks at each other and hitting each other with sticks, calling each other fags and retards and insulting each other constantly. It seemed normal in my neighborhood. so I guees I seemed mean to others when I got older and exposed to others who grew up in a different environment. Mean is relative, don't take it personally.
