While not universal, model-making is a long-time hobby of adults, this is just a very simple and corny model with marketing appeal.

Closest example I can think of is people who built model trains, but there was also replica ww2 vehicles or ships in a bottle, that sort of thing.

It is because the laws surrounding advertising to children in children's programming were removed in the late 70's. Those smaller bricks are based on another line Lego attempted to create back in the 1960s that was marketed towards architects, before CAD software existed. CAD came along in the 80s and Lego dropped this line, but China probably somehow got the moulds for them.

Yet we're content to sit back and accept it as a truth through a piece of glass rather than experience it first-hand. Meanwhile getting trapped into buying some mass-produced, paint-by-numbers plastic to assemble we've settled to be more attainable than real beauty in this world.
