What exactly is Jeopardy, and why is it so popular in the United States? How does the game work? Do you think you’d be able to win if you were on Jeopardy?

The purpose of the game is to explain to people how they ended up in a three-way phone call with eachother.

It's all general knowledge. It's not that obscure but you have to be fast. It's popular because it hits a wide enough range of knowledge someone halfway intelligent can get almost every clue, though maybe not immediately.

Most of the clues originate from The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, a few Facts On File reference books, The World Almanac, The CIA Factbook, some DK publications, the Oxford dictionary of difficult words, a culinary dictionary and then current events/news articles from around 30-90 days before the games tape. Everything is jumbled around to seem super esoteric, but the clues all breakdown in a way that if you know what they're asking it's much simpler than the fun facts and obscure trivia being referenced.

it's the original answer-and-question trivia show. Instead of providing an answer to a question, like you would in a typical trivia show, the clue is given to you as an answer and you must provide the question that satisfies it. The show is popular among office drones and other white collar workers who have an IQ between 105-130.

anything put on TV becomes popular or certainly has a good chance to.
even one season can get cult fans, Firefly as an example. Watched the first season on dvd. I only wanted to see what the big nad reapers looked like, otherwise I'm not invested. Many people are though.

It’s a trivia quiz show. The twist is that you get the answer and you must come up with a question.
It has 2 rounds with answers of various difficulty hidden under prize values, generally a higher value means a harder question, and the second round has question that are harder than the first.
Sprinkled in are bonuses, the allow a player to place a bet on if they can come up with the question for the answer (before the see it obviously).
Finally there is Final Jeopardy round. In this round the contestants are given a category, they wore rhe amount they are willing to bet (up to the total the gave accumulated during the previous 2 rounds)
They are then given the answer and have a set amount of time to write the question.
The one who ends with the most points wins.
There was a time (long ago) when I would have done well. There’s no way I could have been Jennings, but I believe I could have one a show or three against the average player. Over the years they switched more and more to pop culture, which I honestly had no idea how to answer and so on the time I stopped watching. I don’t think I’d win now.
