Just about every segment with Jenny was designed to make you feel some amount of sorrow especially her backstory. For most of the film forest is offering her unconditional love and for his entire life she rejects him, ultimately spending very little time with her past childhood (to make matters worse he can barely even comprehend why it's happening). It was designed as a tragedy; one sided relationships like that are not romantic and the brief flash we see at the end with his child is followed by her death. I think we can agree it is a great film though.

No, the story is a documentary of clown world. It's a dystopian, dark exposition of the reality you live in, framed in such a way to feel sort of ambivalently good about it. Basically it's jewish hollywood hoodoo.

While this is an analysis that has been rak over for decades at this point, the thing most people miss is that the people who made this movie saw this as a happy ending, and the people watching it largely lacked the critical thinking skills and analytical ability to discern just how fucked up and dysfunctional their relationship was.

It says a lot about society and the individuals who live in it. Either so dumb they don't see it or so brainwashed they think that it is romantic or cute or whatever.
