What if you take God into your Heart and mind and trust him with your life path, but don't live a "Christian" lifestyle?
I pray from time to time when things are tough, I'm thankful for where I am, my family, my friends and my situation, but does this make me a good person or a good Christian?
I haven't read the Bible but I'd like to, if not for a religious purpose but more for wisdom

If you're not following God's teachings more gradually over time you're probably not listening or accepting God's grace internally. It's not a purity test: you will always fail that test before God. But, you should be trying to do better everyday to emulate Christ. Of course you will fail. What matters is keeping trying. Don't give up.

Well there is your first problem. That is the groundwork of being a Christian. To read his word, not only once, but study it continually. Read about Jesus and let his nature and character become your nature and character. Adjust your soul to his soul. There was nowhere in history a time better than today to study the Bible. So much that even "Christian" people only know the vague story of Jesus on the cross and dying for your sins and that's about it. Some of the passages can be tough, mainly in the Old Testament, but if you take the time to try to understand why it happened the way it happened, you'll be on the right track when you get to the coming of Christ in the NT.

I used to be like you, you'll find that a lukewarm form of Christianity is insufficient for the storms like with throw your way.

Reading the New Testament, the Gospels in particular, will bring you closer to God and with that, he will strengthen you and guide you. Memorize scripture as well, this is helpful to keeping you on track.

Genuinely, read The Gospels, it is the difference between Life and Death.
After walking the narrow path with God, if you welcome him into your heart, your life will dramatically improve and you'll wonder why you ever cheated yourself out of a relationship with him.

Your life will not necessarily improve in the material ways, although that will come after a while. But you'll cultivate inner peace that doesn't make worldly sense, and inner strength like you never had before.
