El is a general term for a god, it's not necessarily referring to a specific deity. Same with the term Elohim. You misunderstood this story. Cain's offering was rejected because he presented his work before the Lord and expected to earn favor because of it. But Abel's offering showed his faith, which is what God actually wants. The animal sacrifices of the ancient Hebrews was meant to be a shadow of the sacrifice of the Messiah, when one final self-sacrifice would cleanse us of sin forever. Abel was showing his faith in the coming Messiah, which is why his offering was accepted. But Cain was looking solely to the fruits of his labor (literally and figuratively), and we can never earn favor from God via our works.
