Doing drugs isn’t cool in Greece?
I’m Greek-American and doing drugs is seen as cool in the USA, so it will increase your popularity, the size of your friend circle and your social standing in most circumstances. I get the impression that in Greece it’s the opposite though, and that drug addicts are seen as losers there.

The pic is me asking my cousin from Greece on Facebook Messenger if he ever tried drugs and he said he hasn’t ever, he won’t, and won’t try.

Can any Greeks from Greece chime in on if I’m correct about my observation? Why is doing drugs stigmatized there?

I also get the impression that unlike American popular culture which literally encourages people to do drugs that in Greece the situation is the opposite in the pop culture realm.

The only Greek movies that I can think of that depict drug use are:

1.) Tsiou(2005)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0996661/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
The heroin addict in that movie comes off as a loser. But even in American movies heroin isn’t made to seem cool like cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, etc

I think the pimps in the movie Hardcore:
Might have done drugs. I’m not going to rewatch it to prove or disprove it.

Overall there are none of the “do drugs have an amazing time” trope scenes so common in Hollywood since the 1980’s.

I asked ChatGPT:
“Is drug use portrayed negatively in Greek popular culture?”

Partial answer: “Mainstream portrayals: Greek cinema and TV have traditionally depicted drug use as tragic, destructive, and morally degrading. Users are often shown as victims of social decay, unemployment, or urban alienation.
• For example, films from the 1980s–1990s like Ρεμπέτικο (1983) or Ράδιο Μόσχα (1987) depict drug use (especially heroin) in relation to social marginalization.
• TV series (e.g. 10η Εντολή, Κάρτα Μέλους) tend to present addiction as leading to crime, family breakdown, or death — almost never glamorized.
• Contemporary works: More recent films (like Wasted Youth, 2011) and some indie productions take a more sociological or empathetic view, showing users as victims of systemic issues (austerity, youth hopelessness). But even then, drug use is shown as a symptom of despair, not rebellion or creativity.”

Holy shit! Someone mentioned Tsiou! I've watched said film in the past since its dvd was given away for free in a newspaper. And it's from the few movies (at least in my knowledge) that is neither a cheesy anti-drugs PSA nor a degenerate drug culture glorification. Also it's the only movie I've watched whole with drugs as its main theme and it was a surprisingly funny comedy. Also said film while it wasn't mainstream (I guess it was an indie production) it had its cult following back then at the 2000s in Greece.

Why so many junkies demand to be praised by everyone for being filthy degenerates?

I actually watch far more Greek movies than the average Greek from Greece. That’s why I watched Tsiou. I think I downloaded from the private Greek torrent tracker bluewhite-gt or whatever while it was extant.

Greek movies tend to more realistically and thus negatively portray drug use. American movies tend to display doing drugs as an awesome time, being the life of the party and cool. Probably because they are meant to promote drug use in society.

I think the US natsec state literally promotes drug use for various reasons:
1) To develop a “not racist, racism” by punishing blacks and Latinos more for selectively enforced drug offenses
2) since the US drug economy is so big it allows the destabilization of lots of South and Central American countries
3) it gives a huge black budget for the CIA outside of Congressional oversight
4) the lower dregs of society can’t revolt as junkies
5) other segments of society want protection from the drug addicts overflowing on the streets of so many American locales

It is entirely dependent on who you are trying to garner favor with and the context. If you're running with thugs then maybe it will ingratiate you with them, and maybe they'll see you as cool. Chances are they will just be ambivalent about it. In practically all other social and class circles being a drug addict isn't going to win you any favor.

No idea why you would think this mostly has to do with a country. Greece is full of drug addicts.

You’re a delusional anime shut in anime nerd if you think that. There are some drugs like heroin and fentanyl, that the rest of society thinks you are a bit of loser if you do them. But there are so many of them that even those addicts probably have more fellow druggie friends than me, you and everyone posting on this board. If you do drugs like ecstasy, acid, marijuana, cocaine it’s seen as almost glamorous. In the USA outside of religious fundamentalist towns it’s gotten to the point that not doing drugs or being an alcoholic is socially detrimental.

In Greece only really in Athens is there a large permanent colony of homeless drug addicts. In the USA in its rural areas, most suburban towns, almost every city.

This is just retarded dude. You seem to have some sort of view of Greece as this wonderful place where nobody is a degenerate.

Greece is full of drug addicts and prostitutes. Per capita I'd be willing to wager you have more than america, you probably have more per capita than most western countries.

Plenty of American movies and media portray drug use as a negative thing. Is there media that glorifies or makes light of it? Yes. There is also such media in Greece.

I think you just haven't been exposed to the actual culture and are in the theoes some bizarre honeymoon period being that you seem to think Greece is a paradise when it's actually a criminal infested hellhole that is perpetually bankrupt.

How are blacks and Latinos "punished more for selectively enforced drug use"? You are aware the majority of major drug trafficking organizations are from Latin America right? Do you think maybe, just maybe blacks and Latinos are caught more with drugs might just have to do with the fact they are more likely to engage in criminal activity and the drug trade? Nah. Must just be "selective enforcement"? Tell me, how do they go about selectively enforcing distribution laws? How does that work? When they find out about the Aryan brotherhood pushing millions of dollars of dope they just turn a blind eye? You very clearly are talking about things you know absolutely nothing about.

The Latin American countries are the ones who allow the drug trade to flourish inside of them. Total retard take.

Yes drugs are used to fund off the books intelligence operations and otherwise. Guess what dipshit? Every major intelligence agency in the world engages in this practice.

I don't even know how you think that when the past 4 years have been chock full of cities being burnt down across America by junkies and looters. Again, your opinions are not based in any kind of reality

Your final point is irrelevant because the government is doing nothing about it or to protect them.
Anonymous (ID: KVsaOUzQ) Canada No.23471950
Did you ever stop to think that maybe the blacks like selling drugs because they make a lot of money doing it, not because of some government campaign to oppress them somehow by having them making a shitload of money selling dope to white people?

You've got to be 18 to post here btw

Moron, I literally am the first in my family born outside of Greece, with half my family in Greece. I will attach another Facebook Messenger conversation with another second cousin in Greece.

Me: Have you ever done drugs?
Him: Are you crazy

I asked about a year or two ago, he was born in 1998, so he was in his twenties and in peak drug consuming age for an American. Yet since he’s a Greek, he has the ingrained belief that doing drugs makes you a loser so he never even tried them. If he was American he probably would have tried drugs and still be doing them recreationally.

At my work in the USA, I’m randomly drug tested. A huge plurality of jobs to a majority do expensive drug testing because there are so many addicts here. In Greece as I understand it only if you become a police officer or fire fighter will you be drug tested to get a job. I don’t think it’s ongoing though.

This is how the drug war is racialized:
“Under the Anti‑Drug Abuse Act of 1986, 5 grams of crack triggered a 5-year mandatory minimum sentence, while it took 500 grams of powder cocaine to trigger the same 5-year minimum — i.e., a 100:1 ratio in quantity.”

Crack was mostly done by blacks, cocaine mostly by well to do whites. There’s also the factor that since blacks are much poorer when they deal drugs or do drugs they are much more likely to deal and do drugs in the street or public places. Even though whites do slightly more drugs they’re more likely to get arrested for it.
