a well-trained, well-fed, disciplined, bonded dog is extremely rewarding
almost nobody who owns a dog does that though, for one reason or another
it's a big investment
a neglected cat will be more inoffensive than a neglected dog usually
if you want animals to treat as babies, you should probably get something other than a dog, imo, but there do be chihuahuas & things like that, cute little dumbasses

dogs need specific tasks to do in order to feel useful, not just a bunch of behaviors to AVOID, otherwise they tend to get uppity or depressed or anxious or whatever
most people don't have a use for a dog, but they buy them anyway
