the one my friend and go to has been around since 2008 or 2009. it's in an old asbestos riddled strip mall at the edge of an industrial estate. the shop's pretty rundown and reeks of BO, dried cum and the whole autistic spectrum. the shelves are stocked with a myriad of cool things, your standard anime and general manga, old vidya you can find in game shops anymore, the more risque shit like fate illya, pastel ink, knj and every genre of ecchi, hentai and eromanga, VNs, eroge, nukige and a few dozen different light novel. the the owner's a pretty cool guy, though he makes little to no attempt to hide that he's a pedophile and he still has a bit of a stockpile of banned loli themed sex toys and doll from before 2018 and sometime asks longtime regulars if their interested in buying some of them. I'd be interested if I was sure beyond the shadow of a doubt that he hasn't already used them. he also rents out the backrooms by the day to some of the local apsies and spurgs to play dnd and warhammer, which he seems to run like a daycare.

since the normalnigger shop closed down there's been more and more teens, w*men and minorities coming by out of curiosity looking for boruto and boku no hero and shit like that. the owner still lets them in because they bring in money and that he wish the teens would bring thier younger siblings around sometimed, but he doesn't respect them. also a few retro gamers have started showing up lately after word got out about the store's game collection.

there's one shop here that's been open since the 2000s but they mostly just sell western comics so most of the manga is shonenslop.

I agree on it being a shameless cash grab, but if western popular media continues down it's current path, I can see today's teens latching on to anime and manga like my generation did to pokemon. that said it'll probably end up killing what make anime attractive, at least for me, as major entertainment companies buy up rights and licences to any title that's up for sale, than pressure creators to sanitise their works and remove any through provoking, philosophical, socially rebellious, horrifically engaging or sexual themes, or the stuff I enjoy. I mean, it already happening.
one of the national book chains in my town already has a whole aisle of "localised"/trannylated(think jam donuts but with identity politics) shounentrash, all at highly inflated prices. a single volume usually costing about $40.

old mate at the store I go to sells most manga at not much more than $20, since he only pays about $11 per book and he won't stock anything with political shit in it. he knows because he reads every volume before put it on the shelf. he's also got an encyclopaedic knowledge of anime. just describe a show to him in detail that isn't too vague and he'll be able to tell you the name, the names of the characters and the season it come out. he still charged an arm and a let for anime, especially if has to order it in for you. I think he's going to be around a while though since he fill that ultra- specialist niche without even knowing and often writes himself of as an aging weeaboo.

thanks for taking the time to write so in depth as you raised some points I hadn't thought of and changed my way of thinking slightly.
I had always assumed it was a passing fad for normies to be into anime but I think you are right that western media has become so bad that its unlikely for them to stop being into Japanese stuff any time soon. there's a high likelihood of this completely destoying the anime culture I'm familiar with and enjoy.
one of the things that iv encountered that exemplifies what you brought up is how normie political correctness has already changed how translations are localized. a good example being how people now get upset at リア充 being translated as "normalfag".
the term is 2chan slang and used in a derogatory context so translating it as normalfag is the most accurate way to do it and the fact that normalfags get upset with this shows they don't give a shit about stuff like accurately translating stuff while being aware of social context and that they just want shit to fit their ideals. it also very clearly highlights the normalfags inability to seperate fiction from reality in a rational way. any reasonable person would be capable of understanding that what a character says is not always a reflection of the authors values and practically never a reflection on the translator's and that any disagreement with what a character says should only influence their opinion of the character.
Normalfags don't do that though, they refuse to accept that maybe a character isn't for them and demand that they be modified to suit their taste. they also refuse to consider the fact that things like getting annoyed at a piece of media usually means its not for you, they instead insist on appropriating it anyway and demand the culture surrounding it changes to accommodate them.
when I consider things like this the outlook for the future of anime and anime culture looks very fucking bleak
