When I started saving up and investing I just put it into VOO
Then my salary increased and I put more and more into it, and it kept going up

Now I realized (with the help of ChatGPT of all things) that I made a mistake, because VOO is seriously tax disadvantaged in my case compared to an EU-domiciled, accumulating (no divvies) version that is UCITS compliant (e.g. VUAA UCITS) which is completely tax free on gains in my case.

I'm now conflicted if I should just pull the bandaid off and sell VOO, which has made a profit and will be a taxable event, so I can buy the proper version going forward.
I don't think I can avoid it. It's better long term.

The alternative would be to just let it be and never sell it, and just put money into VUAA UCITS going forward. But at some point I'll have to do it anyway and the longer I wait the more the market goes up and the more taxes I'll have to pay.

Depends on container rates
When the Houthis happened they made bank and paid out. Stock went from $8 to like $23.

Now container rates are skyrocketing again because the tariffs on/off thing. Q2 will not be good but Q3 numbers should be excellent.
The stock isn't moving much because people think it's temporary and won't last. I think otherwise.

If you think Iran will never close Hormuz because China needs oil and Iran would never do anything that harms China's interests, then you're in the "nothing ever happens" category.

Wish robingoy allowed short selling besides with options I feel if they allow that feature it will make it a lot easier to make money both ways besides trying to gamble on weeklies and 0DTEs, it’s pretty easy to know when something has peaked for a bit so you can only sell and wait for it to cool off instead of selling the top and buying back in when it’s at a better price but I don’t think (((they))) want retail to be able to have that power readily available on that type of app

if you're long term investing, buying dips reduce your average cost basis/lets you have more shares, which means greater total returns. I thought this was just obvious to all dip slurpers. Obviously you don't gain while it's still going down, but if you can slurp all the way down you're doing good, and even if you can't slurp all the way down, as long as you don't panic sell you're still doing great.

This only works for established companies that have a future. Buying the dip of a failing company that gets delisted then liquidated in bankruptcy cleary is not profitable. There are plenty of other examples where buying the dip isn't profitable for instance buying a plunging ipo that ends up being 90% down and staying there indefinitely only to have risen back up 10% decades later. My point is blindly "buying the dip" when media/shills are shouting to do so isn't always a finacially wise decision.

Close but not quite -- it's just taxed as income. In your case you're in the 20% tax bracket, but if you pulled more out it'd be taxed higher, just as regular income tax.

The reason for this is because the contributions are not taxed at all. So if you earn $100K at your job over however many years and put it into your 401k, the full $100K goes in. But if you put it into a post tax account, you'd only keep ~$80K (or less depending your exact tax bracket).

In the end it's an extremely tax efficient way of handling things, because you're taking money off your taxable income on your highest earning years and shifting it to later years of your life where you will presumably earn $0 and be in the minimum tax bracket.

that makes sense. i quit my job a month ago so it makes sense to wait till next year to withdraw anymore from my 401k if i wanted to minmax it. since next year i won't already have 4+ months of paychecks driving up my income tax bracket. my 401ks are all in 100% S&P so i always thought of them as stocks and therefore capital gains. the income tax bracket was part of the reason that made an early retirement decision so easy.

It depends on your circumstances. Do you have any fall back plans (like family), can you retire (pension) if needed, what other options do you have like a working husband. Are you talking like you lose your job and never get another one, or your car breaks down and need $4k for engine rebuild? Would you need to join the army as a last ditch effort to keep from being homeless. Do you have any dependants and so on. If you spent $60k in one average year (all expenses) it would be good to have $60k on hand (earning 4% in high yield savings/bonds account) in case you needed it) and you would have a year to figure things out. Think of bridges, ways to trim budget if you needed, what you could sell if needed, to keep afloat until you get back on your feet. Lots of people have no savings and the smallest problem and they are homeless.

I can see your point if this were about one companies stock not rising above a certain price as that price is as much as the stock is worth. You're acting as if the SP500 is one stock buyers are trying to determine the value of. What's going on with the SP500 is much more complex than that. Market makers are manipulating the prices of stocks as money comes in from the public as institutions and insiders dump their bags. Money always has a stronger effect near the source, compared to the poorfags that get it last. It's just the way things are.
Also, passive and retirement investors are basically putting weekly buying pressure into the markets. It's probably one of the safest (albeit boring) ways to grow money longterm.

But like anything else, it works until it doesn't. With world population stagnating, I wouldn't be surprised if we have a lost decade or two in our lifetimes.

They're the "nothing ever happens" play of the options world. They can have very good risk/reward ratios if you keep them super tight, but, you have to actually land in the sweet spot for it to profit. Margin requirements are small -- you need the difference between the short and long portions of the position on hand, minus the open credit. This means you can open quite a few of them with very little cash. Pic related is a SPY 6/12 599/600/601/602 condor as of market close today (obviously garbage now with the postmarket movement, just using as an example). Max risk is $17, so if you have $1700 in your account you could sell 100 of these and you'd be covered.

Keep in mind that fees actually start adding up for these because they're 4 contracts per position. At my broker, that's almost $3 in fees right there to buy, and another $3 to sell. Speaking of which, the ideal closure for the position is not to sell but to let yourself be assigned -- but that comes with its own risks, and your broker may not even let you do this if you're swinging a lot of them. Imagine you bought those 100 contracts I mentioned earlier, and it closed with the short put $0.01 in the money -- you'd then buy 10,000 shares of SPY and be $6M in debt to your broker! You could sell it all and get back $5,999,900 of that $6M and only lose $100, but your broker may be understandably upset with you if you try to do that.

A better bet is to sell Iron Condors on indexes like SPX, which settle for cash, not shares. In that case if SPY settled like SPX then you'd just hand $100 over to the holder of the call instead of doing all the rigamarole moving $6M worth of SPY around for no reason.
Anonymous (ID: xgbNr19A) No.60493362
>>60493360
Forgot to mention, the reason you want to let the ITM parts of the condor execute and not buy to close the position is because even if it's 2 minutes from close you'll still end up paying way more to buy to close than you would lose from execution. In that same scenario where it's $0.01 in the money it might cost $200-$400 just to close the position, despite the intrinsic value only being a $100 loss. Plus, buying to close means a second round of fees.

They're vega-neutral, which means you don't get fucked by volatility if you hold them until expiration. They're targeted at specific prices, too. Eg, if you think WMT is going to be like 90-100 by a specific date, you might target 90-95 on your condor.

You're still short on two legs so keep in mind you can get assigned early

you are betting on low volatility, price will stay within a certain range, you buy insurance in case price goes above or below what you anticipate. I like volatile stonks with wide price swings.
