The actual "float" of much of the big stocks is probably a fraction of what the statistics say. It's a small batch that gets bounces back and forth.
I mean... which ETF and retail fund really "sells" their stocks. At best they do quarterly rebalancing or accumulation due to the DCA'ing masses.

This seems really plausible to me as well. Wall Street firms can't make money passing shares between themselves. They have to lure outside participants in somehow, and systematically offload to them. I've never worked on Wall Street but I strongly suspect a lot of their strategies revolve around retail participants. And the constant V-shaped recoveries every day, every month, every year go back to the fact that the price of an asset is whatever price the last order executed at. It doesn't necessarily take a lot of capital to move prices up. If they systematically fill small retail orders at incrementally higher prices all day every day, it will absolutely drive prices up and lure more retail buyers while they're at it. Normies only do market orders as well, because they don't even know what a limit order is, so it wouldn't be hard to pull off.

The reason P/E ratios are climbing is because of 3. That's been a big source of stock market returns in recent years.

Dividend yield is already rock bottom at one of the lowest points ever recorded. Earnings growth has been healthy but the stock market is vastly outpacing it, hence rising P/E ratios.
We'll see if speculation alone will be enough if earnings growth slows for any reason.
