The alternative is getting up typically at least 2 hours earlier making a high consumption commute to work rather that's on a subway in a major coastal city or on a highway pushing and shoving with all the rest of the drags of society at the ass crack of dawn throughout the rest of the country. You can typically leave work somewhat early especially if you see other people doing it as well and your whole world is right there before you know gas station gouged energy drinks and cancer-causing preservative laden dry food. Your personal espresso machine is right there behind you the entire day all of your favorite food or leftovers or whatever you like is right there in the refrigerator you can shower and refresh your teeth and defecate in peace.
Depending on the nature of the job and your skill and qualifications you can oftentimes engage in what's called overemployment where you define multiple jobs that each have relatively light workloads and work multiple jobs in one's collecting multiple salaries. You can get your laundry done well at work and have dinner prepped your house vacuumed and so on.
There's definitely a technical trade-off that corporations are going to increasingly exploit until employees are essentially monitor 24/7 at work or not and the employee is essentially renting their house from the corporation not just sacrificing their own space and their own computing resources for free in exchange for employment.
