Parties in college give you the opportunity to strike up a conversation with someone you have seen in the past but didn't have a good enough excuse to talk to. There is alcohol but you don't have to drink it, as long as ANY drink is in your hand. It could be a water or soda, it just gives your hands something to hold so you don't look awkward.
