I've thought about this some. IQ is inversely correlated to ambition and risk tolerance. Not set in stone by any means, but there's a trend for sure.
When learning comes easy, you don't learn to apply yourself the same as someone who has to study their ass off to get A's or B's. My school valedictorian was decidedly average. Meanwhile, schools are full of kids who slack homework and study, but pass with B's because they can smash the tests. Risk aversion also follows this curve. Dumb people are used to failing, because it is a common part of life, and they will keep throwing darts with various results. Whereas you'll find highly intelligent people everywhere that can't get out of their own way due to fear of failure. So a large chunk of smart people have to actively push themselves out of their comfort zone and habits learned from school, whereas the average or below average is already primed to regularly put themselves out there and elevate their position in life.
