This is not true AT ALL. A high school diploma was sufficient for most middle management track jobs. A college degree gave a slight leg up because they were rare, but outside of "elite" industries like finance a degree was not common enough to be a requirement, unlike today. Boomers were conned into believing you "just needed a degree" to be set for life because of that perceived advantage for landing an "elite" job but failed to understand how supply and demand works, as well as overestimated hundreds fold the value of some shit humanities or business degree versus uncool nerd shit like math and engineering which explains the many millennials out of work whose parts told them to "just follow their passion and the money would follow".
