The way charts are exaggerated leads to this behavior. Take a look at a daily SPY chart on an upswing or downswing. A .5% to 1% change will look like a cliff. It will literally be a seversl dollar a share change in price on a share that sells around $600 but the chart will be exaggerated to make the change look huge.
I set all my charts to extremely flat rather than auto scale to negate the extreme visual effect of small changes that is the norm in stock trading charts.
