A majority of international gold trade goes via Switzerland. The US is buying a lot of gold, especially lately. Therefore, there is an insanely high trade deficit from the US to Switzerland, because the US imports Gold from Switzerland and pays for it in USD.

All while any non-physical (aka software) products, where the world pays gigantic sums to US companies, is ignored when calculating trade deficit.

Trump simply looks at the trade deficit, sees a big number in USD and then says "they're ripping us off, let's tariff them".
