I've been in crypto since 2017 and I still don't understand what XRP does. Something something muh remittance or muh hawala or something. Next to no one seems to use it for anything worth mentioning. The current stablecoin boom is all about Eth L2s and Solana and all Ripple has to offer is press releases about their also-ran projects. And yet it sits right there, on 3rd place in the market cap rankings. I'm not even a hater. I've even owned a few for a while. I just don't understand. Is it just a memecoin at this point?

An easy example is something like a network between banks where the banks run their own nodes coming to consensus with each other. Litecoin relies on proof of work, XRP is comparatively just classic consensus among a group of nodes. This means that Litecoin is permissionless and trustless, whereas you need a trusted (and thus permissioned) set of validators for XRP to work. Other networks that have small validator sets but are still permissionless like Solana and BSC are superior to XRP while inheriting the same qualities about performance but are significantly more complex in nature. Hence why I'm not interested in XRP, because it is only useful for private networks between known and trusted participants (like interbanking) and not public trustless networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
