It was my first time watching Initial D. There's a mountain of unseen anime out there. I think it can be a comfort thing to rewatch old stuff, not necessarily regressing. My favorite anime tend to have several rewatches over time.

As of last year I am being productive though. I am learning by enjoying so even rewatching an old show can be beneficial. This was a great idea. It's like the more fun I have the more productive it means I am being ( ´ ▽ ` )

I am a little weird so that is already a guarantee. I watch youtube videos of various people talking casually too, they have flatter intonation and talk differently, but they're the same language.
I think this viewpoint is pretty shortsighted, you do learn to understand a ton of grammar patterns and words, and vocabulary is the single most important thing to accumulate an absurd amount of so you should have fun and practice recognition all day every day by doing fun things. I learned English with video games and weird fantasy movies, I know better than to yell you shall not pass at people. Practice is practice, just don't go around talking like a samurai or a JC.
The scary thing is clear pronunciation and recalling words fast enough, and knowing the most natural sentence structures for various situations. I have yet to have a single voice conversation with anyone, but I kinda like texting in Japanese every now and then.
Anyways I am just having fun, it is not like I am going to work as a doctor in Japan.
