That's the entire point, is that the money we use is backed by debt that we the tax payers are responsible for paying off. The government has no problems issue its own bonds, so why can't it issue debt-free currency? Go read the book "History of Central Banking". One of the main drivers of history is destroying non debt backed money and replacing it with credit.
Notice how all of the gold in the world sits in vaults? That is because they use debt-money to steal all of the gold and they now use it to collateralize loans.
