I just bought a $4k video camera (I'm not even a videographer, but I want to shoot some vids for my music project).

If your projects with the camera make you more than $4k then it was a good decision.

No because you can easily rent out high grade professional video camera also, so they're not a bad investment if you're willing to deal with all that (contracts, insurance, etc).

Also, a lot of the pro-consumer cameras hold their value. A Canon 7D with lens kit costs almost the same now as it did in 2011.
