The 150k guy makes 3x what the 50k guy makes, but he saves 14x as much. The 300k guy makes 6x the 50k guy, but he saves 40x as much. This example shows how people at the bottom are trapped by cost of living and canโ€™t save for shit, they will literally never escape wage slavery. Add compound interest and the gap becomes even wider

the cost of living is absolutely insane. if you live anywhere with jobs it's basically $1800-2000/month between rent for 1 br plus utilities, and then another $200-300/month on commuting expenses even if you own your goymobile outright (insurance, registration, fuel, wear & tear). oh yeah and you need food, so that's another $350-400/month unless you want to eat rice & beans 3 meals a day a literal peasant slave.

You can survive on 50k if you donโ€™t try to get a fancy 1BR and drive a new car. Rooms in a house are still renting for 700-800 a month in a lot of areas, you can bike to work or rely on public transit, and cook most meals at home.

This is what people don't understand about COL calculations.

Like, for example, if you're a programmer fresh out of college in Ohio you'll make maybe 60k starting out on the high end (closer to 40-50k in this market). That's $3600 a month after taxes, which is a """"good"""" wage for Ohio.
Even in the cheapest ghetto shitshack accommodations, you're spending BARE MINIMUM 2k a month on housing, food, and transportation. That's being incredibly frugal and living in a rough part of town in Ohio. Which leaves you with $1600 for everything else in life. Your job opportunities/growth is fucked, you'll be lucky to hit 80k after 5 years. And you are forced to live in Ohio.

Meanwhile, in California, wages start at 90-100k and increase exponentially. That 90k wage nets you about 5k after taxes. Similar accommodations (ghetto apartment, cheap food) in the Bay Area might cost you 2.5k a month. But more reasonably you could get a nice place for $3k. Now you have 2k left over. In a few years you will be making 150k, or 200k+. You make more money, your career trajectory is much better, your lifetime earnings will be way higher, and all the while you get to live in a desirable place with world class amenities.

Have you actually looked at the prices of things? Because it's not lol. Even considering that location influenced spending is only a portion of the money you spend.

Either way, the point is that 2x salary and 2x col works out in your favor. making $3k with $1k savings is worse than making $6k with $2k savings

so at the end of the month, maybe $300. a lot of that just went into brokerage. i did spend money, always small amounts like $6 here, $14 there. it adds up really fast. the thing that fucks me is rent and rent goes up every year without fail. went up $100 last year.
i'd like to live in a house but $200k house = $2k in mortage payments, impossible earning $2k/mo, you need $3k/mo at minimum and i do mean minimum.

Show me where the 1 bedrooms are for that much. Then show me where the moderately cheaper ones are. Then show me where the super cheap ones are. 1brs for that much are probably in very niche and rich areas and not the average at all in the US. I think you're full of shit and trying to doom people out of esteeming themselves because people trapped on this website know how the game is played and are a threat to the system.

Boomers won. The entire economy exists to serve their interests. Rent is high because they stop new houses from being built so that the existing houses (aka their investments) will be worth more. They caused the covid lockdowns that fucked everyone up. They caused inflation and the national debt. Social security and medicare are literally young people funneling all of their income into boomer pockets. They will keep wages low by importing more Indians and Mexicans to replace you. They are crashing the system with no survivors and they will make fun of you for being lazy and poor while it happens.

Hard not to when 50k buys less every year. Someone's "within means" turns into "flagrantly overspending" especially with less liquid assets and debt like cars and housing and loans that they were encouraged to take for all their lives to get a degree or some bullshit

Hmm...let me put my thingkin cap on. The website is rent.com, a site where one can find apartments. I wonder...is it in their interests to collect and post data in such a way that they line their pockets with more money after they do so? Like selective trials and studies for big pharma? Because IF you train people to think rent is at average some high price, people will probably dare not look for anything cheaper and will buy at that high price. In other words, lie until that reality you want people to buy becomes a reality. I live in a HCoL area myself, highest I've seen is 1600 all utilities for a 1br. Lowest I've seen was 850, all utilities, no internet. Private renter on the latter, it was a fine basement to their personal home.

So I'm still calling bullshit. When renting, private renters tend to have lower prices, though it not being a corporate model and you may have to deal with "you can't live here anymore, move out," at some inopportune point. Utilities CAN add to the bill, but when renting, most are usually included.

You could just not rent and not have these problems to complain about. In fact, that's what most everyone is doing. The biggest issue is that there aren't enough good paying jobs and opportunities to have such jobs and Wall St. insists it's okay to inflate prices away anyway. Cities no longer make sense to live in if you don't already have a life there; you're better off renting (relative) high prices in the boonies and making less, than rent in the city. Swaths of shitty homes are worth 300k in the city, whereas you can find better homes for around that price in small towns/suburbs and not take too much of a cut to your wage and raise in CoL.

I see the same threads every week, which means that there is a concentrated effort to demoralize people. I insist that you just find a way to get middle class income, encourage more people to do so and cease spreading false and negative information. Get a good job, buy out of the rat race.

I really donโ€™t have sympathy for poorfags. 50k/mo is brown people who donโ€™t speak English. If you seriously cannot get yourself into at minimum a $100k/yr job, youโ€™re permanently retarded and pathetic.

We live in the age of AI and remote work, desu if you donโ€™t have atleast 2 jobs right now youโ€™re leaving a shit ton of money on the table. Iโ€™m not memeing. I work a total of 20-40hrs a week and will be bringing in $250k - $300k gross this year.

I donโ€™t want to hear someone complain about H1Bs or some shit, there are so many start ups out there and so many businesses that want people who are hungry and willing to learn. Get good. You got 5yrs max before UBI dystopia or WW3 or some shit.

No wonder they run total psyops on you guys to leave the parental home at 18, you can even see it itt

When I'm not at work I'm inside my shed on the internet (starlink). It's actually more like a crate but big enough to lay down in when I tip it over. I've insulated it with free blankets, and I have an arctic sleeping bag, so it's safe year round. Only problem is animals try to get in at night because they can smell what I made for food the day before. Usually it's like mice and foxes but one time my entire crate got knocked around for several minutes. Wasn't a bear because you can smell when bears are in the area.

It's only insane for spoiled brat millenials that don't now how to buckle down for just TWO FUCKING YEARS to pay debt or get an emergency fund.

>BUT RENT IS SO HIGH!
Get a roommate. I'm sorry you "just like your privacy teehee" but the ability to walk around your kitchen naked isn't really worth your retirement. If you think it is, then don't whine to me about cost of living

Then you millenials spend 1300 dollars on the newest iphone because green text bubbles give you the ick. 90 dollars for the unlimited everything cell phone plan even though you have expensive wifi everywhere you go. But you have to have unlimited data so you can stream your 4+ media subscriptions.

And the amount of millenials that never cook and only go out to eat 3 times a day is disgusting.

I am a self hating millenial before you start throwing around "boomer" insults. But at least boomers would buckle down. They would go to the military if they were struggling financially. Boomers had it easier with the economy, but they also only had the newspaper as their only subscription. they would go to the library and read a book for entertainment, not blow 400 dollars on V bucks or sports betting.

well I mean you have to put in some effort, once I moved out I started hanging out at places and became a regular at a good restaurant and a good bar, took dance classes, attended meetups, got a gym membership, took boxing classes, and took classes at the community college in town. slowly but surely I grew several social circles and I wouldn't have been able to do this living in the stupid tiny town my parents lived in.
