It's being done a lot in Europe, and all of them are a money sink.
This is the default template for government acquiring a large stake in the company
1. it's not going that well for the company, but it is either important or semi-important (air-fields, energy, large employer, weapons etc. are the favorite for government to "invest in").
2. Government invest, and things do not improve, they tend to worsen. The influx of people into the company with no skin-in-the-game is one of the major factors for things to worsen.
3. Additional money is needed to "turn things around", which the government obviously do because it looks worse to admit defeat than to double down into the unknown (..and you can keep repeating step 3, because no one wants to take ownership of the L).

My favorite part of the lockdowns was being told that they would never take the Trump vaccine, followed shortly by telling people they deserved to lose access to hospitals if they didn't the clot shot.
