My kid also went to the NICU and my entire bill after everything, including an ambulance ride, was only $1500. I paid for it with my FSA, which my company matches. So $750 free from my company, and another $750 from pretax income.
People with bills like this are either showing the before insurance amount, or they have no insurance. If they have insurance there is a max out of pocket anyway. Even if not there is a federal maximum well below one million.

I think the point is that there's no circumstances under which the hospital did 1.5 million bucks worth of work for this kind of care, so it's heinous that there are certain circumstances in which they'd try to charge it.
