Manage your risk and also be aware that its statistically possible to hit 8 or 9 losses in a row, be robust enough to shrug those off and keep going, since its a marathon.

I don't hold a losing position unless I sincerely think it will go back up.
It is extremely hard to predict what the stock will do tomorrow which means the risk of holding overnight is even higher than the risk of holding intraday.
The longer you hold, the more risk you are exposed to.
You aren't actually one of those guys who never sells for a loss, are you? That's a terrible strategy. The absolute best case is that it ties up a ton of capital.

I get 3.5% APY which means I'm getting about 0.28% per month. I feel like a retarded cuck. It feels like I could hit that multiple times per week scalping. I only pay attention to one stock, it's the company I work for, because they have a stock tracker on our home page when we log in. I watch it fluctuating all day long.

just a thought but since nvda is a tech shit company like the rest of them, why are investors pricing in real returns like its going to actually pay out dividends? The tech companies absolutely suck at passing on profits. It's part of the tech business model, infinite growth and scaling. Any profit is re-invested for more growth and scaling. amazon still doesnt have dividends and it's the most reliable of the tech sloppies.
So I ask, are they pricing in future profit sharing that is ten years down the line? Why invest in a company that's not going to pass anything on to you.

Risk management.
If you have a defined loss of 2% per trade and you hold it thinking it'll reverse, you've violated your own rules. What if it drops 10% and never recovers? You'd now have to win 11% JUST to break even. Why not focus on avoiding losses so those wins become even better?
>close eod
Gaps are a bitch. Do you hold over the weekend? Trade news? You shouldnt unless you have a system for it specifically. Last thing you want is the CEO to do something stupid over the weekend and tank your position randomly. You never know.
The idea is to have several tight wins and losses that mostly negate eachother, and to have 3 or 4 big runs that account for most of your bottom line. You dont want to get stuck in a trade that undoes 3 months of trading

I've been wondering this since I first learned how stocks work 10 years ago. It's especially notable that someone as fundies-obsessed as Buffett refuses to pay a single penny in dividends, relying entirely on number go up to attract investors.
I just don't see how investing in a company that doesn't currently pay dividends could be anything other than speculation.

Just today I left $300 (~15%) on the table during a day trade because I was hoping it would go higher. It ended up going lower and I lost... I think $200? Maybe I even lost $300. Made more yesterday so I'm still green for the week but it hurt my ego. Greed's a bigger bitch for me than fear for sure, but I've seen plenty of anons who seem to panic sell at the first downturn.

Investments are forward looking. Look at how time value of money works, and Net Present Value. You basically take current cash flows and assign a risk premium and factor in inflation to see what the "true" value is. Problem is, stuff like P/E feel largely irrelevant because quant and TA shines in the short term, but when your time horizon is 10, 25, 100 years, fundamentals matter more.
Anyways, bond markets feel like the 200 IQ investors and for how much US debt and inflation we've had recently? It feels like high equity valuations are futureproofing themselves against USD going to shit

the opportunity cost isnt necessarily keeping that extra cash invested, just the bare 2.5% savings interest means you're losing $75 a year from it, no risk involved. Having an emergency fund is still a minimum requirement you should have, but i'd like to collect 2.5% interest on it at least, maybe on $3k it's not that much but an emergency fund of $15K just sitting on a chequing account instead of savings? thats an extra $375 a year now you miss out on, that starts to be substantial
and to me it's more the principle that i cant move that $3k out if i wanted to without being charged like $15/month or something, that's stupid it's my money let me do what i want it

But that requires you to sell your stock. If you only benefit from the stock by selling it to someone else, you're just speculating. You're looking for a greater fool. It's just that we arbitrarily decided that if your time frame is longer than a few weeks, it's not "speculating" but "investing." You aren't actually getting anything by holding the stock, only by selling it.
>>60854918
>You basically take current cash flows and assign a risk premium and factor in inflation to see what the "true" value is.
Sure, but who cares? If I own 10% of a 10 billion dollar company, I don't actually have 1 billion dollars. I can use that 1 billion dollars worth of shares as collateral to get a loan, but the only reason it's worth that much is because the bank assumes they can sell it to someone else. It's Greater Fool Theory all the way down.

How does selling stock work? Do you just click a button that says sell and the money goes into your account? Or do you have to wait until someone buys it? What if you're ready to sell and cash out your big gains and then no one buys?

you shouldnt even be looking at P/E solely if you're doing fundamental investing, if you're going to be looking at multiples, look at price-to-sales
a company could be trading at 1000x pe (or negative) temporarily but have a more reasonable 3x to 5x price-to-sales, remember if a company is growing massively and they're paying the expenses right away for future revenue then as a
pure example, although they are spending $1m to get revenues of $2m (then that's $1m profit), but that revenue is being collected over 12 months -> then on earnings that shows up as an expenses of $1m right away with only 3 months of that revenue collected so only $500k, a "loss" of $500k
PE is useless outside of established and stable companies. Everyone else who are focusing on growth, then you have to take the extra step to factor in future revenues and growth, thats why double-digit PEs have become normalized

Admittedly using the 10% example isn't great because that's actually a significant amount of voting power and gives some say in how the company is run. But it could just as easily by 0.1% of a 1 trillion dollar company. That's worth a billion dollars too but it isn't going to give you any influence over the actual insiders. So where's the value?

So you're buying a stock because you're betting the same company that issued it will buy it back from you?
To be clear, I am absolutely not saying you shouldn't buy growth stocks. You should. What I don't understand is how it's not speculation. You're buying it because you think you can sell it at a higher price later. Actually holding it does nothing for you, except that you can use it as collateral for loans - but only because the bank also thinks they can sell it later. Everyone is betting on a greater fool.

Equities are actually useful though. There are class A and B shares that do/dont have voting rights. At the end of the day, they are DEBT instruments, legal obligations the company loaned out. They HAVE value.
Suppose all shareholders voted 100% to liquidate and dissolve the company. It's a simplification, but all assets (property, plant, equipment, cash and equivalents, intellectual property) would be converted to cash, and each investor paid proportionally (theres also senior debt and things like corporate bonds)

My understanding is that, in practice, this only happens if the company is unable to stay in business. And in those cases creditors get priority over shareholders, so shareholders usually get nothing.

there's lots of reasons but here's one, underneath every stock is a business. if company a's business is less profitable than company b's, then it's accretive to company a to acquire company b. they don't need company b's dividend, they just capture it's cash generating operations. that's not greater fool theory at all. also just because a company doesn't pay a dividend doesn't mean it can't or won't, and future cashflows have a value as well.

What does winning look like? Having the biggest stack of gold/guns/farms/food/kids/life/etc at the time it goes down? Is the idea that it can still go on for years, so the game continues until then?

For sure. There's been a variety of winners shilled here. Hell, I've been on 4chan since 07. I've had ample opportunity to buy BTC (or other crypto), and I've never really thrown more than a few hundred/thousand at it at a time and never held more than a couple months. I'm overly risk averse.
So, interestingly, it's not really 4chans fault entirely that I'm poorer than I "could be" had I never come. What you take out of here is fairly personalized. For me, I'm fear-driven, so all the talk of dollar/system collapse got to me and made me overly conservative. Had I been a more risk tolerant individual I could have been made very rich by coming here.
Honestly, I'm a middling person and I made middling gains. I can't complain or place all of the blame on the chinz. A poor workman blames his tools, sort of thing.

Fear is the one thing you're supposed to embrace as an investor, because the market has historically recovered from bad times. Black swans are typically the best entry points.
To look at it another way, if the system were to truly and irrevocably collapse, what difference does it make if you hold stocks or cash? You can't even defend property at that point, unless you're invested in bullets and grain.

Two thoughts I had recently:
Crypto market cap is like 4T and BTC is like 2T I think. How much higher can that reasonably go? Like, the world will run out of money before BTC 10xs.
I really do wonder if crypto was adopted/supported as a sponge for excess cash post COVID. Like, that money is doing literally nothing, all 4T of it. Just got absorbed into nothing, like a sponge.
Also, I know BTC is generally seen as a monetary instrument/store of value and transactions aren't that important, but it is interesting how we're like many many years in now and the pretense of using it as a currency and for transactions is just totally gone.
Sorry that was three things. And they were crypto not stocks.
Consider buying TOST.

When they were doing their riot's in charlotte they dropped a pallet off in front of my cousin's shop, and he just drove out there with a forklift and dropped 'em in the back of his truck. He built a walkway out of them.

just an FYI, Meta just did a deal 10B with Google, but that's likely using Google's AI hardware and not Nvidia's. MSFT is working on their own AI chip as well, but it's not really ready yet. Nvidia will still be the best option for independents, but the hyperscalers don't want to be solely reliant on Nvidia.
