My thought is due to protracted volatility, eg numbers stay high for a week or two inexplicably, or spikes beyond where you enter SVIX, since leveraged losses hurt a lot. With writing calls, you get the cash/risk upfront and just wait for the payoff, and VIX is cash settled vs the index so theres no risk of assignment
