There is no free lunch. Time is time and there are components that have deteriorated and are about ready to go in a 20 year old car, low miles or not.

You should've gone back another few decades with the square design. Cars look so gay with rounded corners. Look at that model from the 80s, so much nicer.

Pre 2009 Buick Lucerne I hear is really good. There's probably some older BMW & Mercedes models that are good but I don't know enough about them. 328i are decent for beamers but not quite grandpa tier.

A well maintained 2003 car with 0 tech, low mileage, absolutely mogs newer cars. Have fun paying 26k+ minimum out the door for a fuckin civic.

I've been thinking about getting a panther platform car with low miles but >>61077609 it seems hard to justify 10k. The other route is getting one with 100k+ miles for dirt cheap.

but it's funny seeing them succumb to nostalgia and ignore mechanical wear until they have a shitbox that drains their capital over and over with repairs

i get it OP, but stuff like this is dumb. in a decade, it's going to be unusable/have constant stupid problems, and then you'll be stuck with the ugly modern tracker crap like everybody else. you're just driving a less safe and less efficient shitbox

look at cars from the 90s if you don't believe that. cars don't age well. old ones are only around because there's a guy putting thousands into it just to keep it in good shape.

Even a new Toyota can set you back $1000 for just changing one headlight.

buying a 1980s-2000s Toyota product is the high iq play

they all pretty much last 200k+miles
cheap as hell
have all the features nu-cars have minus the gay spyware
you can put 80k miles on one and resell it for what you bought it for

How low mileage do you have to get? Is it worth it to buy one of those Mercedes or Lexus that sometimes run for 250k-300k miles if the car already has 150k miles on it?

Is there substantial maintenance that needs to be done on a 150k mile car even if the model has a reputation for lasting to 300k miles? Or is there any way to even know that without having a mechanic look at it?

my first car was a 1989 BMW 535i. Transmission began to show signs of needing a rebuild, so I just swapped a manual into it instead. man, i loved that car.

now I drive a 2006 e320 diesel that I got from an elderly client whose husband passed away. it was his car and she had no interest in it, so she sold it to me for $13k back in 2012. A decade and a half later, it's still pristine and drives like new.

it cannot be understated the difference being kept in a garage makes. i see people with $200k in vehicles sitting in their driveways while their garages are filled with trash worth $5k. people are retarded.

Even if it's perfectly maintained and low miles, all of the rubber seals and gaskets are starting to fail, so you have to repair those. And if you live in a rust state it's probably already starting to rot.
$10k is an assrape overpay.

It's hard to say, having a mechanic check a car that's used probably is advised. Shit having a mechanic friend is huge.

Typically long lasting cars have bulletproof engines and solid frames, you'd have to look into expected problem of specific models to know what to look out for. Lots of different things can be go wrong, transmission is a typical one.

If luxury is what you're looking for stick to Lexus, way more reliable, especially if you don't know much about cars.

>>61078162
That's a huge score on the e320, good for you. I've got a soft spot for euro diesels. Would love me a TDI in pristine shape.

>>61078661
I'm not saying it's a perfect solution, but those things you mentioned aren't impossible to fix. I agree the prices are still fucked, the used car market in general is cooked, but anyone who knows a mechanic or has some know how, this makes way more sense then getting sodomized by the dealers, and their services.
