To add to the tech advancement discussion, main issue rn is the lowering of the ore's grade. Silver being a crustal mineral (accumulating near the surface, becoming rarer the deeper you dig), we basically know all the good & accessible spots, and have exploited them for a long time.

I'm not gonna pretend I've made off like a total bandit (after all gold JEWelry is almost never a huge bargain) but over the years I've gotten some super nice pieces at roughly spot even accounting for the refining premium and the approximate gemstone weight. That being said if you are looking at estate sales for gold/silver only I can't really recommend it. The money you spend isn't the money. That's how I think of it.

I spend a set percentage of my monthly income on PMs regardless of their fiat prices. When it seems like prices are high, that money buys fewer ounces. If prices are low, that money buys more ounces. So, the majority of ounces in my stack are always gaining more value against fiat than the minority of ounces, understand? If prices continue to rise I'm doing well. If they dip I'm doing well. If a small percentage of my stack temporarily loses fiat value in the short term, 3 years from now they'll be worth more fiat value. And the percentage of my that I bought cheap relative to the price movement are worth even more. Unlike crypto ir a stock or a bond, gold and silver can't become worthless. Over time the amount of fiat required to purchase them always increases. If I'm not trying to flip PMs in a few months like a negro, I can't lose. That's how I look at it.

The US did not pivot to oil, this is a misconception derived from the "petro-dollar" moniker. Post WWII the US dictated the formation of the New World Order and its monetary system unilaterally.
