This is /smg/ so maybe it's biased, but to me the fundamental is that the stock market's returns come from earnings growth + dividend yield, whereas gold's return comes from inflation alone. The rest of the fluctuations are speculation, which is true for both.

Historically, dividend yield + earnings growth has outpaced inflation.

But both are pretty lofty today on the speculation side, P/E ratios pretty fucking high. Who knows what will happen.
