The US used to be the sole refiner of REE's, the industrial processes for their commercial refinement were almost all developed in Mountain Pass mine. The science for their refinement hasn't changed.

Issue is it leaves a lot toxic sludge that is also radioactive. That's why China dominates it's processing.
