These layoffs aren't due to lack of revenue. They are being used to pump stock prices. Maybe it seems callous to put thousands of families into economic hardship (especially going into the holiday season) for quarterly financial reporting, but that's just the Invisible Hand of the Market at work.

Landing roles in traditional engineering like mechanical is difficult. I know someone who had multiple internships, research experience, graduated magna cum laude, yet they still couldn't find a job until months after graduation. From what I hear the trades is its own behemoth; unions are gatekept hard. I have a friend who spent time working in a workshop who quickly left because all the older guys were spiteful alcoholics. Nursing and fields like civil engineering will most likely see an influx of graduates in the coming years, though. From what I see online, wages are high.
