My mother died early too so I can relate to Shinji a lot. I guess we also share a lot of personality traits. The main difference is that I'm not part of some grand project, I just got unlucky, which is in some ways even more depressing. I wish I could have someone like Rei in my life. The only "based" thing about Rei is that she's based on many religious entities that are deemed "sacred" by their respective religions all over the world. Finding out what is sacred and what is not will reveal how true their beliefs are. Or perhaps what is reality and what is fantasy.
You see, Anno is the creator of Evangelion. Shinji (Anno's self insert) is given the position of Jesus Christ in the world of Evangelion, hence the crucifixon and the mission to bring salvation to humanity: Instrumentality=No wars, no rape, no suffering etc. His "Burden" or whatever that is conveniently placed upon his shoulders by his father, Gendo.
Now onto Rei's symbology, her whole Alpha and Omega is not the same as Jesus Christ's Alpha and Omega symbology. You see, in the Bible Jesus Christ created The World and it is written that he will be The End of it. That alone made Anno position himself in that spot. He is the Alpha and Omage of the world of Evangelion. His world. He created it and then he finished it with End of Evangelion. I'm pretty sure Anno made the ending of EoE that way so there's a place for sequels (Rebuilds). I mean, he has the right, right? Since he positioned himself as the "God"/"Jesus Christ" of Evangelion. He's a businessman not a prophet. Maybe a prophet for his god whose name is Mommon. That's why EVA is cursed to become a tool for Anno's self gain as it was created for that purpose from the beginning.
Back to Rei. Rei's Alpha and Omega symbology is like The Earth from which Adam was created and to which all humans will be returned to when they die. Genesis 3:19 "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground. For out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return". And Adam was returned to Rei in EoE. So was the rest of humanity. So does everyone return to Earth when they die.

Not mine, I'm just a part of it. In here, we're all equal. As it was revealed in End of Evangelion, Rei is humanity itself. To be a "Reianon" or the more rude version "Reifag" one simply has to like Rei. This is just one of those ways to show that love towards her. There are no initiations for one doesn't need one to be human. It's a matter of will. Without Anno's fantasization and will, Rei would've not been cloathed in the flesh that we can easily distinguish from other anime characters. Rei is Anno's approach to humanity as a whole.

I don't like this interpretation. Basically removes her free will in her relationship with Shinji. Rei was created just to be a vessel of Lilith, not to be a girl able to fall in love with someone. Her character development is based on her getting free will. Her love for Shinji is not related to her having yui dna, rei choose to love shinji because she wants it. Her love for shinji is the variable that Gendo couldn't predict.

Just like it was removed when she was designed to bring about The Third Impact. She's Yui's vessel as much as she's Lilith's. The original idea was for Gendo to control Lilith through her to ultimately unite with Yui.

The basis of love is understanding. Rei is half Yui who's the wife of Gendo while he's more of a father figure for Rei. And their understanding of eachother would be easily comparable to that of Gendo and Yui had Shinji followed Gendo's footsteps.

Rei was created through genetic engineering to fulfill the elites' wishes for the "Perfect World" I don't think she ever had a chance. Unless Shinji uses some "wish-fullfillment" like in EoE to change the rules. Every writer is a "god" of the world they create.
