I've always roomed with people I know - friends, coworkers, acquaintances - or at least people I know and people THEY know, like a friend of a friend situation. In situations where I couldn't find anyone I know to room with, I just had my own room.

When I was a broke teenager I would room with a big group of people. It got to the point where we had like 10 people in a two bed room. It was around that time I realized the guy the organized it was over charging people to pay for his whole con. I stopped rooming with that group mostly because they were slobs but that was the final. Now as an adult I cannot say I blame him since he was the one willing to put it on a credit card.

I've done this with people I already knew. Worked out alright, but depending on the person in question, you can be stiffed.

I've tried to meet people and then stay at their rooms (with their permission) but that hasn't always panned out. One time, I had to sleep in a car because the hotel called the police and were name checking anyone to prevent overoccupation.

What are the rules for inviting people back to hang out in the room? If you're the room holder would you restrict people from that?

Usually I freely give what I have, such as food , sports drinks, glow sticks, or alcohol. I do that regardless, bring an excess and hand stuff out. That's enough to ensure goodwill. Most of the time, it's somewhat of a bunkhouse in the hotel.

Very seldom but sometimes. Most notably being that Holmat 2018 the girl whose name was on the reservation to check in didn’t leave until super late, like so late we almost lost our reservation bc she had a “cosplay emergency” and “couldn’t” leave. We were stuck in the lobby with our shit for hours on end. Literally had so much time we went to the sports bar and had dinner. Ultimately we all ganged up on her and made her pay for the first night herself bc we felt it was fair bc we spent the first night in the lobby. Aside from that just basic p2p drama, people shit talking, relationship drama etc. One girl thought she had one of her props stolen and she made some thinly veiled accusations, one to me included, only for her to find it under the bed the last day of con and barely received a shitty apology from her once I called her out, even then she tried to recoup UwU points because “cis man yelling is scawwy aaahhh”

I try to room with small groups or by myself if money permits, but if I’m a little more cash strapped than usual or feel like saving a buck I will. Also rooming by yourself at a con is extremely lonely

Only roomed with friends and friends of friends, though a lot of them were people I'd only met once or twice before. The important part was someone vouching for them.

Either guys sleep with guys and women sleep with women or couples get the beds and singles get the couch. If you're gonna have someone back at the room let the others know so no one gets a nasty surprise. Keep sex to an hour then get them out. Agree to any other rules beforehand and get ready to kick people out if they don't follow them. Make sure there's rules about room quietness if you're not a party room.

i've been going to cons for over 10 years and the best two pieces of advice i can give you for sharing a hotel room are 1) mutually agree on one setting for the thermostat so that people aren't changing it at 3am and roasting/freezing you, and 2) bring a pair of foam earplugs in case your roommates snore. if you solve these two problems, the rest is easy mode.

Me and like 5 other guys shared a room at Otakon '13, it was chill. Embassy Suites free breakfast and drinks were a major boon and the host was even cool about bringing weed into the room. Never done the total strangers thing, but I have stayed with some people on the outer edge of my friend circle. Friends of friends. It was a great time and gives you some idea of what it's like with a new group of people. The only downside is that they were the "pack 10 people into a room" type and holy shit never again.

Back when I was at Anime North I got white girl wasted with some girls from school and randoms, they invited me to sleep at their room, like 7 of us in a two bed hotel room. We had to sleep like sardines sideways across the bed thank heaven for the booze or I'd never have gotten rest. Women snore too.

The next day I hitched a hotel room with other randoms I met but they didn't know me so I had to sleep on the floor that time. I got no rest that night because everyone else was wasted and up till 4am.

Moral of the story book yourself a hotel room 1 year in advance with sober friends.
