i wish we had more big cons. theyre so fucking expensive too

going to avcon and pax this year and thats probably it, hoping to pick up some lolita stuff. thinking of handmaking a cosplay this year and entering a comp, never done that before

Yeah we definitely need an industry level convention similar to ax smash and animaga are good but are nothing like a proper industry event, almost everything here is little pop up artist alleys which would be good if we had a doujinshi scene but we don’t even so it’s just a circle jerk of genshin impact stickers. I feel the smaller cons should be more themed. I’m looking forward to azurite since it actually has a niche behind it rather than being an amalgamation of western fandom culture

man id love to have a doujinshi scene here, but yeah its all artist alleys with mostly mid art from the ones ive been to. its almost always genshin shit or other gacha games, or whatevers popular at that moment. would love to see some more niche stuff

at avcon the only good stalls is those lolita stalls and the retro gaming ones, the figures are now super overpriced and all the other merch is shit

never even heard of azurite, never seen a con like that here. seems cool, might see if i can travel for it next time its on

I’ve been working on forming some sort of doujinshi scene here but honestly there’s very little interest. Currently this community is against anything relating to otaku culture but I hope one day people can be more open towards it.
I’ve never been to av con but I’ve heard good about it. maybe I’ll try table there this year. Anime stores in general are pretty shit (at least the ones in Melbourne) I’d love for us to have some sort of book off equivalent which I think Sydney has something similar but I’ve never been so I’m not too sure

do you make and sell doujin yourself? im definitely interested in supporting any doujin scene here since i cant draw for shit myself. ive imported a few japanese doujinshi over the years so english stuff would be great

avcon is a really decent convention, guests and cosplays are ok, they have a good amount of variety with the stuff there. little section for touhou, fighting games, shit like that. its the only con ive gone to religiously since i started getting money. the lolita stuff is really nice too, always some sort of handmade stall

down here in adelaide theres only shintokyo afaik which is pretty decent, ok selection of manga and merch, games too, and decent prices. and they got those things, i forgot what theyre called but the frame arms girls mecha figs which are cool. im surprised melbourne doesnt have better considering they have a bigger scene there with all their cons and comms and shit. you'd think thered be a bigger demand for good anime stores

yeah I’ve made some but have been way too anxious to sell them in conventions since I’ve already received a lot of harassment from the local community because of my art and don’t want to put a larger target on my back. trying to get out of my comfort zone a bit this year with it hopefully it doesn’t end bad.
i will def try go to avcon just for the touhou section, I’ve never seen handmade lolita in person so that sounds really cool! I like frame arms I worked at one of the melb hobby stores and we would stock them sometimes but there was a low demand, critical hit is starting to get in some Japanese manga but it’s limited to what the workers know if they don’t know about a series then they most likely won’t import anything related to it unless it’s a new release prize figure or good smile product

There was definitely some level of it in the past even if it was just a small amount. Now days if you try have a proper discussion about anything anime related people get upset and god forbid you mention lolicon

I'm left leaning myself but I'm honestly sick of the wokism impacting the Australian con scene. Gotta they/them every fucking cosplayer instead of assuming pronouns because god forbid you use she/her with the 150cm overweight girl dressed as a bungo stray dogs twink.

Every con has a generous dose of inclusivity for all, family friendliness, pro LGBT and queer and shit which is really stopping the otaku scene from thriving, because sexual deviancy and crassness is a big driving force behind the culture.

Honestly with the direction things are going, I don't think it's getting better. I table at artist alleys here, and every year the rules get more strict to cater to everyone, the conventions get more sterile and clean on what they want from artists and exhibitors, and the crowd that usually attends get more annoying to deal with.

Tired of it.

I feel exactly the same, I honestly worry that I will get kicked out of cons based on my art or that I’ll get turned down from a convention because I’ve drawn porn before. Conventions are wayy too family friendly to the point where it feels like they are for kids. The artist alleys feel so boring because everything is so cleansed there’s no room for creative freedom because events are so profit focused.

nayrt you shouldnt be kicked out for doing porn art before

at avcon here in adelaide they have stalls that do nsfw on request behind the scenes, just not shown in the stalls. they also have the afterparty event for nsfw art sellers

it does suck though. i dont think children should really be at cons or we should at least have ecchi/adults only cons to substitute this

how hard would it be to start our own con?

I’ve been looking into it recently and the hardest part is venues, everything is pretty expensive at least in my area renting out a venue would be about 3k per day for the cheaper options and making back that money would be pretty hard especially for a niche or 18+ event. an outdoor event wouldn’t work for nsfw content but could be a cheaper alternative to indoor events but I believe you need council approval. Pretty much all the cheap options wouldn’t be suitable for nsfw. I totally understand why Aussie events are the way they are but I’m just so jealous of asias events.

probably would need to try get a sponsor and advertise heavily to get something like that to work and finding a venue would be hard for something like that. theres probably a place thatll do it, and probably cheaper venues out there (id hope)

probably worth looking into, im willing to try pool a bit of money to fund something like this

I'm someone else that has looked into this and it is super-hard to reach the audience you're looking for. Around 10 years ago, I don't know if they're still around, but there was a group that hosted super-small and niche conventions centered around various sci-fi franchises. You wouldn't even know they were happening unless you knew someone that knew about it. For some reason though, they were able to get really good actors to come along for these small like 100ish people events. They would usually host them in University halls and stuff, so they might have been subsidised by a uni group perhaps (not sure though, the lady running it was an old lady; very nice woman).

In the meantime, I run anime music events/anikura in Sydney that have a decent turnout for what they are. I usually post in /jp/, but I've been lurking in this part of the site recently for the drama in the aus/idol threads. If you're in Sydney and want to help build otaku culture, come along to those!

I honestly think that doing something where you have skills and slowly gathering more and more people is the secret to success, rather than aiming for a convention as your first thing. Like, if you guys like drawing doujins, maybe just start meeting somewhere to trade books and slowly build it up to where you can all lay down a few hundred for a PCYC hall etc.

The idol scene in sydney is pretty impressive, id like to attend an event over there at some point, the only times the melb idol events have been good is when its 90% sydney idols. a general otaku event with doujin artists and idols would be pretty cool. id like to host art meets but the few irl friends i have dont make anything. i have no idea how to find local people that are interested in otaku culture. maybe im better off moving to sydney kek

Anyone going to A2 next weekend? I know a few of the tablers since we always have a good gossip at AVcon/artcade/supanova but idk $30 for a single day with nothing really going on is a bit much for me, I would've expected tickets to be $15 for the day time, I don't give a shit about the orgy rave. I hope they keep running stuff in the future all the same, always nice to have more small community stuff.

Burger here

Going to my first aussie con here in summer or I guess winter fall? down there. Anything to know about Aussie cons? I have a few friends there but non of them are the con goer type the ones that do go just tell me "ye everyones fuckin drunk and as long as you don't get thrown in jail you had a good time". Not sure how accurate that is.

Any words of advice? The event I am looking at is in Melborne

youre not allowed to drink at almost all cons ANYWHERE as theyre family friendly now. they dont sell alcohol at them and youll certainly get kicked out for being disorderly if you show up drunk

your friends are retarded. this isnt how cons work here in aus at all

Melbourne people are constantly bragging about how their city is safe, welcoming, and has great public transport. I was born in NSW so it's in my blood to hate on them. My God given birth right to be a hater aside, your friends are fucking stupid like the other anon said. Even the after hours 18+ events are strict and ready to throw you out if you look like you're sipping a lil too much

It'll be different as you're going to a con, but my general advice for visiting burgers is you really need to understand that the average Australian is going to think of you like a dumb dog, which may be in an endearing way or an annoyed way. You're expected to be loud, overly sensitive, and dramatic about basic things. Buuut you ARE going to a convention where people are expected to be loud, overly sensitive, and dramatic about things. If you're going to a Melbourne con it'll likely be a large and busy one, so just navigate it the same you would a busy 'murican one.

>>10947904 im guessing you are going to animaga, its a pretty good event and hopefully I can get a table there. The guests are good and probably the best thing about it. Everything else is meh. I’ve only been to anime expo for us cons and it’s nothing like it. It’s a pretty safe for work event. All Australian cons are safe for work it seems. the organisers is an old Chinese dude so the event it’s self isn’t too lib or faggoty the community of people there however are. the Melbourne anime scene is horrible

i love that avcon started doing an adults event. I never thought i would be able to walk down an AA and see big tits and fuly erect dicks just out there ahahah and you can drink there!
I do also really like that they at least try have a big selection of gaming that i can actualy sit down and play, so sick of events that im bascly paying to look around stalls and other advertising crap. Its not perfect but i feel avcon tries a little harder than other event

the mahjong group always makes me laugh, they see I have FFXIV stuff and start trying to get me to sit and play with them. I hope this year the extra space hire means I'm not having to bury my elbows into landwhales so I don't get crushed, I'm not working this year so won't have a client in a wheelchair to clear the way for me
