Did anyone like this cocktail before The Big Lebowski? Whenever I hear someone say their favorite mixed drink is a White Russian, it feels disingenuous.

I can't handle that much half and half so I switch to Black Russians after the first round or two. I haven't seen the movie in a while but I think The Dude drinks more Miller than White Russians.

That the dude likes something like a White Russian so much is the kind of low key funny thing the movie does. It's a meme drink because it combines tons of sugar, caffeine and alcohol at the same time, so there's barely an occasion you'd actually want to drink one unless you're a casually alcoholic day drinker with a sweet tooth, and on top of this the drink is kind of silly for just using vodka instead of a rum that would go better with milk and sweetened coffee. It just implies this kind of extreme laziness and I don't give a fuck to drink something like that more than occasionally, let alone as much as he does.

Yeah, I remember always being fascinated with Kahlua because I knew people who made it somehow. They'd give it away at Christmas all through the 80s and 90s.
I'm not sure Lebowski even did anything to make the drink more popular. It's a pop culture reference I guess, but it's always been a well known drink. Black russian, white russian.

I don't know how young you are or where you live but it's nothing like that. A lot of people consider it a dessert drink. The dude is always half stoned and buzzed on something anyways.
It's not any kind of joke they're making by having him drink that. There's no reason for you to have put so much thought into this only to be wrong.
