Used to like it as a kid. Can't stand it now. Like jackfruit, tho, and it's jackfruit season, too.

I lose all respect for anyone disgusted by the taste or smell of durian. The more exaggerated the disgust, the more I despise them lol

I don't understand the people who associate "dirty" smells like sewer or rot with durian. It smells like weird onions and sulfur to me, mixed with a fruity sweet scent.

I like it, but not indiscriminately. The frozen ones are no good. I think freezing force-ripens them so they are always overripe and nasty. I also do not like the "monthoong" (sp?) variety that's ubiquitous in Thailand. Indonesian durians are the best.

Maybe that's why I don't like them anymore. I ate them when we lived in SG. They were almost certainly shipped in from Malaysia. Maybe the ones in America, even fresh ones (yes, they are available but super expensive and uncommon), are a different variety than what I had growing up.

I do not.

I prefer it as an ingredient in desserts to eating it on its own.

Both frozen and shipped Durian are usually no good. You want fresh tree dropped Durian and then they stay only good f on a couple days. Export Durians get cut unripe and they do not ripen properly after that and taste like garbage. Worse if they are slowly frozen whole, then thawed.
You can break open tree dropped Durian, then vacuum seal and flash freeze them and maintain good quality, but almost no one does that.

That's weird because jackfruit is absolutely sold that way here and it's generally better than the fresh stuff. I say generally because if you're willing to pay the premium for the express shipped stuff, nangka/jakka can be just as good here as it is in Singapore. After trying both fresh and previously frozen durians here and found them both to be horrid, I just gave up. Even bad jackfruit is still edible. The durians absolutely were not.
I'll still buy durian ice cream, though. That's still good.

Yeah, jackfruit is much more forgiving. Also for harvesting it a little early. With Durian, you have to absolutely do it right, or youre gonna have a bad time.
Which also explains part of why a lot of people hate it. They only ever tried bad ones.

It's okay. I find the smell to be tolerable but the flavor isn't good enough for me to seek it out. It's part of a class of foods I call "Exotic, Tropical Fruits with Surprisingly Mild Flavor"
