How the fuck are people still using delivery platforms?
>all menu prices are upmarked an extra $3-4
>service fee
>delivery fee
>"small order fee" if you don't buy enough
>tip so the driver actually takes your order and doesn't deliver it completely cold

By the end of it something you could pick up for 9 bucks ends up costing you double or more.

Is it just lazy morons wasting their money?

I think this explains a lot of it. When covid happened people started drinking a lot more and those delivery services all started being a big deal.
I'll bet almost half of their business is people so wasted not only that they won't drive, but that they temporarily don't give a fuck about paying $30 for a burger and fries "value meal" that would otherwise be $11.

They give you coupons every so often, like $10 off which make the food the same price as picking it up yourself. You used to be able to combine the coupons with other deals, like buy one get one free. I remember ordering $4 burgers, and paying $16 for 8 burgers, delivered straight to my door on a raining day. Also here, tips aren't expected.

this is not typical.
some restaurants are niggers and charge more on the app, but here's the trick, don't order from those restaurants.
also, the small order fee is easily ignored by ordering a normal sized order. get a side or a drink.
and yes, it will be more expensive than getting it in person, but that's because you're paying someone to deliver it. you want convenience? yes you're gonna pay more

Sometimes people just want to go outside. Have a date, meet up with friends, eat something unusual, treat themselves etc.

I go to places in person and I order from the same places other times, you don't need some faggy breakdown to compare receipts that are the same orders but one is delivery and one isn't. It's usually 5 bucks more, don't know who the fuck is giving a 4 dollar tip to a driver, I tip a blanket $1.00 and most service/delivery fees are around 98 cents here, the rest is the uppricing of the items.

I think there's a considerable amount of credit card debt being racked up by this whole industry. I don't see people working hard and paying their bills and still paying $25 per meal on a regular basis, especially if it's all these zoomers who don't work good jobs.
I know several people who've accumulated tens of thousands in debt by just assuming they'll never have to account for all of that money. Getting multiple cards and maxxing them all out and then ignoring the mail for years.
You can't win against those creditors. You'll end up paying them back one way or another and your credit will be FUCKED going forward.

But the promise of some semi-warm burgers on your doorstep so your video game chair never gets cold and your Call of Duty strike team of other such incels don't have to wait for you sure makes that 'convenience' seem worth it at the time I guess.
Fucking idiots, all of them.

Destruction of family left the world with a lot of single people with disposable income. My friend is 36, single and makes good money. He orders 90% of his meals and just doesn't care how much it costs. It ticks me off not because of the price but the quality. I tried a few delivery orders a long time ago and the food was so shit it wasn't even worth it. Pizza is the only thing that can be delivered and still be good enough to eat. Imagine eating a burger that has sat in front of some jeets air conditioner for 30 minutes.

I don't use them for delivery. I check them to see if there are any combination BOGO + $x off $y deals nearby. And then, importantly, I pick it up myself. A lot of the time the deals are app specific, and the combination of deals on the app are better than what I'd pay if I walked in and ordered. I used to also get 10% cash back for any purchases made through Uber, but that ship sailed, but it was at the time another compelling reason to use the app for pick up orders.

Its a closed market designed to reduce consumer competition, anyone with a brain can see that in 5 seconds. they are paying to boot smaller eateries off these platforms, they are monopolizing.

Fast food isn't cheap any more, and it's not good value.

Pretty much everybody I know that door dashes frequently is either outright rich or comfortably upper middle class.
I think the stereotype of zoomers and poor people door dashing every meal is just a few examples of comically irresponsible people getting blown out of proportion. When I was in college (way back when these apps first came out) 9 times out of 10 my classmates who would frequently use these apps definitely had parents who would just pay off their credit card bill every month.
People underrate how much support parents give your "broke" friends. I'm in my early 30s now and all of our friends who have bought a house coincidentally have rich parents who had $50k lying around for a down payment. Which sucks for my wife and I because our rich parents are hyper vigilant about not letting us be the kind of brats who are still dependent on Mom and dad into our 30s so other than helping us pay rent in college we were cut off after high school.
Those apps exist because there genuinely are just enough people well off enough to sustain them. The middle class is shrinking, but most of that attrition is because of growth in the upper middle class. Not a reversion to being low income.

I use Uber Eats when I'm sick or just burned out from work. It's still like twice a month at most, and since I order rarely I get coupons. In my experience most of the people who rely on these services regularly are retards who buy $30 burgers from Wendy's then wonder why they don't have any money.

Often, yes

A lot of drug runners, at least in Europe, "work" on delivery services, taking orders rarely just for cover. It's a great way to be constantly zipping around town on a moped with a big backpack and not seem odd to police.
Have a bunch of styrofoam containers full of nugs ? Just keep a few of them with food in them at the top on the very rare chance you actually get stopped

I almost used doordash once when they sent me a 40% off coupon but with all the fees and tip and everything it ended up costing exactly as much as it would have sans coupon.

Then I saw doordash drivers saying if I didnt tip I might as well not even order because theyd just let it sit there.

So I just didnt. Fuck em.

I think what pisses me off the most is that you pay a service and delivery fee, but that's not actually paying for your food to be delivered - you have to pay another $4 delivery fee to the driver, or you literally won't receive your food. They'll go out of their way not to deliver it, or accept it in the first place, they will maliciously fuck with you if they do take your order, etc. And while they're fucking pricks for doing it, at the same time THEY don't get paid if you don't chip in that $4 tip, like the delivery company they "work for" doesn't even pay them a wage, so unless YOU pay their wage they're literally losing money to deliver food to you

How much is the average delivery fee over there? Fuck the tip. When I'd order delivery here in the UK, first of all I was pissed off that the restaurants would bump up the price on the food - i.e. Something that was ยฃ2.20 normal menu would be ยฃ2.89 on the delivery menu, then a 10% service fee up to ยฃ2.49 then the delivery fee. I live in the centre, these restaurants are less than a mile away and it would still be ยฃ1.99 to ยฃ3.99. How much is it per mile there?

Itโ€™s like a bad habit and learned behavior. Like how people reinstall tinder just to swipe or ordering random stuff off prime because it arrives the next day. People love instant gratification and the feeling of being catered to. Food delivery apps are the quickest vehicle for that. Also they took full advantage of the climate during the pandemic to make them become socially acceptable so people donโ€™t feel bad whereas like 20 years ago ordering mcdonalds would be an insane slob move.

In bongland at least they are back into an investor-fuelled growth/loss-leader cycle focussing on certain areas. This means they're throwing stupid free money offers to try and push 'new' products for further squiggly line go up currently shopping delivery stuff. So on one day a week a random bunch of items are 50% off on top of a flat ยฃ10 discount voucher and free shipping. So while each item will have maybe a 10-15% retard tax you just bulk-buy whatever's on stupid discount and can be frozen/is shelf-stable, apply the voucher and get ยฃ30 worth of shopping that they claim is ยฃ40 worth done for ยฃ10.

Similarly if you open the app/site, make a bunch of orders and then back out at the checkout every few weeks they'll start throwing higher and higher 'please come back' discounts at you that you can stack up for a single order then come back in a few months. Just do this while working from home and stuck in meetings or whatever. It's similar to the idea that you should never order chain pizza without using the big discounts.

NTA and not defending the goyslop consoomers but if you paid $20 once a week for say 50 weeks a year not counting christmas and one other week off you only get to $1,000 not thousands. You could probably reasonably suggest a non-fatty is replacing a meal worth $3-5 as well, so either increase that budget to $25 or reduce the actual cost to $17 or something. Ditto if they aren't a greedy shit they probably get enough for leftovers the next day.

it's even worse than that. Last month I was eating at a local pizza place and got to talking with the owner, he said he can't even get listed on the app because the restaurant doesn't have enough fast food places around it. According to him, fastfood franchises make up so much of the sales on the app that if you're not next to a branch of like McD's or KFC you'll never get a driver to come to you area so the app filters you out during candidacy. He was really upset about it too even though his restaurant is packed every night, guess he figures he's getting jewed out of some extra sales.

because fast food places and restaurants dont do their own delivery anymore. they're happy for some 3rdie to do it for $1-2/hr than to actually have to pay someone $24/hr to stand around all night waiting for orders.

even Dominos, Pizza Hut and the others have fired their delivery drivers and outsourced it all. Its more expensive, takes longer and the customer service is worse.

lots of people pulling 70+ hour weeks, getting home and wanting hot food ready to eat, but are still somehow too braindead to plan ahead to fill their fridge/freezer full of ready to eat meals.

If you want a window into the future look at China. The men all work delivery to pay the women who are streaming on twitch, then the women use that money to order delivery.

I'd been waiting to say this, but it's much cheaper than a DUI. Unless you can walk to your local bar or other places, it's the only option without risking thousands of dollars, time in jail, and a suspended license that makes you Uber to work.

I live in a city in the Southwest, and it's not like I can just walk downstairs and find food like in New York. I've gotta drive. The closest thing I have is a Walgreens with frozen shit, and I'm not taking a 30 minute walk to get Hot Pockets when boozing.

Why is Jersey Mikes charging 54% more for the same sandwich when ordered via UberEats (other then they can gouge dumbasses)?

Because I would think the restaurant would prefer dealing with orders via apps with direct deposit and having a driver just pop in and get out quickly, instead of possibly having some soccermom in the store, hemming and hawing and slowing everything down? Time is money.

At least your nephew works, mine was a straight-A student thru jr.high and high school and got scholarships for college, then did literally nothing for 1/2 a year and dropped out, citing "anxiety" and "suicidal thoughts" and now (he's 26 years old) he just sleeps all day, fucks around on discord all night and has declared that he identifies as a woman...

>Most drivers won't even bother to wait around if you're not magically in the place they went to because they misread your adress.

Yeah, it's not uncommon to see food deliveries just left on the floor of entry lobby of my apartment building. What happens then, is the restaurant charged, the driver or the customer?

He has his own fridge down there and I've never looked in it. The only thing I noticed in the delivery was milk. I've never known him to be a picky eater but at that age I ate a lot of Chunky Soup and Hamburger Helper.

Sorry to hear that anon. He sounds lost and modern society goes out of its way to ensure such young men remain lost instead of finding a good path. Don't what they're going to do when their parents start dying off and they have to run their own lives.

>If you weren't a fucking retard and could make a sandwich it would cost $2.

A young coworker either gets fast food on the way into work or (because he doesn't have a car) has it delivered literally every day. I've tried convincing him to just buy some lunchmeat, bread, cheese, etc and make a sandwich but...

He's only had one job in his life (an easy gig at a label making company) and it only lasted a few months before they shitcanned him.

My last college roommate dropped out after I graduated. He moved back to our hometown and back in with his parents. That was almost thirty years ago. His dad has since died and his mother is elderly.
His plan when he was young and dropped out was to inherit the house when he is old and coast through the rest of his life in a paid off house, using whatever his parents left him for living expenses. What he didn't expect was an extreme change in the neighborhood. Let's just say basketball is now universally enjoyed in that area whereas there was a love for mayo sandwiches when we were young. The value of the houses has dropped, even with the rest of the housing market going up. My guess is someone from the neighborhood is going to solve his longevity problem for him. The time to sell was a decade ago when the area was just starting to change and his dad had died.

from what I've heard it depends, if this is the first time this has happened to your account you're automatically reimbursed. But if somehow you've been having the same problem over and over, there's some automatic flagging process that will mark you as suspicious and not only do you not get reimbursed but potentially could get your account banned. This happened to a guy I know at work, he got unlucky with drivers four times in a month and got banned because they thought he was running some sort of scam imo (this is just me speculating, all I know is he got an email saying he was displaying sufficient suspicious behaviour to be banned).
