If you had money, you wouldn't need to cook anything. You'd eat out every night or have food delivered to you. Rich people don't need to learn to cook, only loser broke failures do.

1. Canola oil is FINE
2. Butter is FINE
3. You don't need to crush a garlic to peel it, simply twist it with your hands and the skin will come right off
These are the only genuinely helpful things I can think of right now

>rice
the very first thing to learn. get your rice perfect, and you have a staple starch in basically every culture, and the base for likely thousands of recipes from all over the world
>whole chicken
see above, but meat and fat instead of starch
>at least one stir fry
any one in particular. once you know the basics, you can jury rig basically anything into a stir fry
>scrambled eggs
yes, these do need a recipe depending on how you want them. they also require technique.
>fried eggs
again, it seems obvious almost immediately, but there is technique and someone with no cooking knowledge needs to know how to do it.
>boiled eggs
at least 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a regular saucepan, boil ~12 for a semi hard boil. the vinegar aids peeling. even fresh eggs peel almost perfectly
>bread
bread is a required recipe. do you need to cook it all the time? no. everyone needs to know how.
>pizza crust
a good pizza crust is an art, and depending on how you make the dough, you can tailor exactly the texture you want. therefore, a specific recipe is needed.
>pasta and at least one sauce
this can be a basic ass "brown beef and put in tomato sauce" thing, or bolognese, or whatever.
>at least one salad/salad dressing
you need leaves unfortunately.

1_don't cook drunk if you can't see or stand straight. at best you'll need stitches at worst you'll be in a burn unit or worse
2_every stove is different, thermometers aren't
3_dont leave your knives in the sink
4_taste as you go. this is what 'season to taste' means. you don't wait until the very end of the recipe
5_cook large batches, freeze leftovers
6_pracrically everything from fast food to gourmet meals can be made at home cheaper and better
7_coupons, buy in-season
8_open your kitchen window and close doors of adjoining rooms to cut down on lingering odors
9_practice what you like to eat, it's not about mastering every dish
~12 different but solid meals is enough variation to last a lifetime so long as you-
10_leave yourself room to fuck up now and then. You could always use an excuse to order pizza and shitpost on /ck/ about it

Serious answer? I'm bored so:
>Eggs
Of all variety from hard boiled to poached, a 5 year old should be able to do it (aside from the poached one)
>Bread
It's literally just flour and water+whatever to be fancy, even yeast is not a must and I bet 95% of people here have never even tried it
>Pure meat
I guess not much cooking here but an adult should know how to make a roast, turkey leg, steak etc. without ruining them
>Rice
Like nigga, if your rice can be used as mortar it went wrong, read up how much water it needs and how long it's supposed to cook
>Pasta
Actually just like the above but the amount of water is barely a factor, since pasta soaks up way less water
>Soup
Just throw diced veggies and/or meat in a pot and let it cook for hours till the water tastes like something you would eat, everyone should be able to do that
>Stew, Curry, Bolognese
See above but more cooking time and learn how to thicken the liquid if necessary, see next entry
>Simple Sauce/Roux
Flour and butter, mix in a pan till you get a thick liquid, can be used as basis for simple meat sauce or to thicken stew and the like, DO NOT BUY SAUCE THICKENER YOU BASTARD USE ROUX
>Potatoes
Not every potato can be used for everything, otherwise potato based dishes are easy.
As a side note, yes you should also be able to cook basic ass veggies like broccoli till they are soft if you can cook potatoes.
>Breading/Coating
flour, egg, breadcrumbs, in that order, no matter if fish, meat, cauliflower or a stick of butter, a simple breading is easy and hard to fuck up, especially with a deep fryer

>coffee (even if you hate it you'll meet people who REALLY can't function without it)
>potatoes/sweet potatoes.
>rice
>beans
>burgers
>breads (just pick whatever kind you like, for example corn bread is easy and lasts a while)
>a decent pasta dish (there are a lot of easy ones that still look and taste great)
>stew
>fish/chicken (there is virtually nowhere in America you can't find cheap fish or chicken)
