I dont trust potluck food, especially being in canada. I always imagine the worse conditions possible that the food was cooked in and cant stomach getting food poisoning(mostly because i cant afford to get sick) although the temptation is great because free food, i like to remind myself i am not an animal where i can be rewarded for free food doing a job. I dont know, i just dont trust other peoples cooking unless i see it myself, but takeout is another beast entirely

If I brought a soupy chili mac with rich cheese sauce studded with sausage chunks and strips of roasted peppers and topped with more cheese and bacon everyone would love me because I'm good at that kind of thing.
Potlucks are generally casserole type foods or little sandwiches or bites on sticks. A good amount of them end up being baked mac and cheese and that's not a bad thing.
Just bringing a pan of stuffing from a box of mix is unforgivable though. Unless they did up onions and celery in it all nice.

I have attended so many church gatherings over the years where everyone brought something. There were always some weird, gross selections of things that were sweet and salty and had onions too, shit kids hate. But never once did anyone get sick.
