Does it really matter though? She was essentially just indicating that it wasn't her invention nor recipe.
It's actually a common recipe in the islands, people who had cans in the pantry for loss of power situations, and long shelf life. At some point you have to do something about that expiration date, or the sudden potluck situation. People who live in food deserts, in remote places use up their pantry often. It's why we have tres leches and flan in the caribbean too, or spam creations in Hawaii, too.
