I just drink whatever dry red is on sale, $15-35 unless its a holiday or special occasion, then I'll go up to $40-75 depending on the event and what's available.
>>21409983 (OP) There's really not that much out there that's too similar to Sauvignon Blanc (especially from Marlborough), but you can try other Sauvignon Blancs from other regions (other NZ regions/Australia are probably the closest in style).
If you want something that has the green notes of Sauv Blanc, try Semillon. If you want other aromatic whites, try Riesling and wines made from Muscat varieties.
In terms of reds it's kinda harder, maybe Zweigelt, Schiava or Gamay?
>>21410107 red wine that has green notes sounds like a loire cab franc to me. can also show up in cab sauv, malbec and others. really anything with pyrazines, which can also give that green peppercorn or green bell pepper flavor. some winemakers lean into having a bit of that flavor, most treat it as a flaw and make sure that their fruit ripens fully under full sunlight to make sure it doesn't show up
my favorite sauv blancs these days (outside of producers like Vatan and Dagueneau, which I'm not nearly wealthy enough to have with any regularity) are from Von Winning
>>21410305 Yeah I could have gone down the path of Bordeaux varieties for the reds, but they're usually medium-full bodied and thus not as friendly to someone who wants something similar to a white.
