People who walk in aren't in a hurry, people in the drive thru are.

It makes the owner of that restaurant more money. You don't have customers taking 300 napkins, 57 ketchup packets, drinking 13 gallons of soda, spewing diarrhea all over the bathroom and leaving a mess for the employee to clean up.
You sell the drive thru customer exactly what they wanted, 10 napkins, 3 ketchup packets, a cup of ice and a shot of soda and they fuck off until tomorrow.

Its just faster and more profitable. Did you notice after covid ended a lot of restaurants kept doing drive thru only because "not enough employees"? They can run an entire restaurant with 3 workers instead of 6 to monitor the register, clean the dining room, clean the toilets, and giving karen a free apple pie. They can also turn the AC to a higher temp and turn off lights too.

I hope this helps.

I don't get it, either. In store customers are more likely to get rowdy/unruly/physical. The average lardgolem/honey-glazed hamplanet won't ever actually get out of its car for anything. It will just yell, cry and shart, ineffectually and drive away to some other drive thru.

No, because I don't eat fast food often enough to have noticed either way. So a lot of them have gone drive thru only, have they? What locations in cities, where lotsa people don't drive? Do they have a walk-up window?

people who walk in are easily in "jump over the counter and kick your ass" distance

No most places have opened up with the full dining room, but those $20,000 self-order kiosks are still cheaper than having some dumbass stand at the cash register all day.

Look up "CosMc". Its a drive-thru only mcdonalds. Taco bell is building them drive thru only. I saw a documentary how drive trhus are now the preferred method of fast food purchasing and pickup because when its fast they don't have to get out of the car. Thats on the consumer side though, restaurants are doing it because its simply more profitable. Simple as that.

people in the drive thru can just be too lazy to go inside. people will sit in the drive thru for 10 minutes even when there's no line inside because they just don't want to get out of the car.

I got free food a couple weeks ago at a mcdonalds because they couldn't find my order in the computer or the drive thru line wasn't fast enough. not sure.

Sometimes when I'm in the drive through I put my truck in reverse and back up a few inches, it freaks people out.
