Anyone thought about, or already roasting their own coffee beans at home? I'm on the fence about buying picrel

Yeah, you probably should buy some proprietary AI powered subscription based gadget to brown some beans that are hard to find. You're probably the exact customer they made it for.

I've roasted my own, purely at hobby level. First used the popcorn popper meme, and then upgraded to a fresh roast sr540 (fancy popcorn popper) which I still use.

It's ok. I've had some really good roasts, and mostly okay roasts that I think are mainly carried by the beans being pretty freshly roasted vs sitting on a shelf for weeks or months. You probably get lower variance with higher-quality equipment, but it's good enough at the low end. I do like fresh beans even when they're kind of poorly roasted. Also it makes good gifts, since people like to see "wow homemade coffee", and even if it kind of sucks it's a consumable so it doesn't feel like a burden.

I've thought about doing more autism like sticking some more thermocouples into the sr540 and measuring roast profiles and shit, but I've since moved on to other hobbies.

No subscription, or AI on this roaster. There was another roaster (Ikawa Home) that did force you to pay for an app/subscribe but surprise surprise, they're dropping support for the app soon.

internet mostly (sweet marias). and sams club or costco occasionally sells unroasted beans for some reason.

I'm sipping some cold brew right now, from beans I roasted last week. It's pretty good. I like really light roasts that are sour and fruity, so that is one advantage to doing the process yourself.

And damn, I finally looked up the thing in OP's picture and it's fucking $1500. Definitely don't get that to start.
