My dad used to steal and make me steal the spice shakers at restaurants. He had two kitchen cabinets full from top to bottom of spice shakers and condiments and other goodies borrowed from restaurants.

It's salt. They don't have salt up there, so they import it from Utah. But California sounds better, so they just call it that.

That term makes me think of the "California Vegetable" Instant Lunch, which had some of the best seasoning powder ever. It's been years, maybe over a decade, since I've seen it in a store.
