Anybody have a recommendation on a decent stand mixer that is both reliable and not stupidly expensive?

Eh, they are a meme unless you do any of the following:
1. Make cookies (creaming butter + sugar)
2. Bake bread regularly
3. Whip egg whites on the regular

Everything else can just be done with a hand mixer or immersion blender, which are cheaper and take up WAY less space. And even then regular bakers will likely tell you to hand mix for the skill, but I say fuck that - automation ensures you actually cook shit at home and won't fall for fast food slop.

This.
My wife wanted to buy me one, but I simply couldn't find anything useful I would do with it to justify the price.

I do a lot of baking regularly, I've been hand mixing my dough for years. I just got a raise at work and my birthday is coming up, wanted to buy myself a gift.

all of this desu
I got an old kitchen-aid from the mid-00s for free from my parents because they weren't using it, and it's nice having it (I make pizza pretty often) but they're overpriced to shit
I don't have the meat grinder or pasta roller attachments though, those seem worth their price if you've already got the machine

Get a kitchenaid
The stupidly expensive part is the attachments, but they are mighty tempting.

I electrically mill and sift my own flours for doughs, pastas, noodles, dumplings, thickeners etc. For nutrition and taste. It would be a waste of doing this if I didn't go the full monty and use a stand mixer.

I want consistency and almost nobody attains that without using a stand mixer. Shop when they go on-sale. 0.02

Just get an older model which has a grinder/blender attachment. I'm still using my grandmas, it's an electric motor it doesn't wear out.

Husband got me a Hamilton Beach or something. It was cheaper than KA. I'll look up the actual brand when I'm home.

Nope. Kitchenaid is the way to go and you definitely don't want the cheaper models. That being said you only buy a Kitchenaid if you're going to make money out of it.

Same goes for coffee machines, barbecues, ice cream makers etc.

Stop being poor
On ebay I can get something new that is around $100 new that is decent or, what I actually did, buy one of the best stand mixers ever made used
It depends what it is going to be used for
>>21420402
>then regular bakers will likely tell you to hand mix for the skill
This is complete nonsense, please do not listen to posters who talk like this
I used to make bread and pastries for a living, no actual baking professional in their right mind tells home cooks to "hand mix for the skill" whatever that means
That isnt a thing
There are some mixes that can be done by hand, but for the others, you need a machine

Depends on what you are doing, I have two kitchen aids, one tilt head and one lift bowl and I also have a spiral mixer just for dough.
The tilt head is good enough if you rarely use it, the lift bowl is good if you bake regularly but not often enough for a mixer specifically for dough.
Spiral mixers only make dough but they do so very well.

This. But also this >>21420418. I use the hell out of my grinder, I use the pasta roller some, and I like to make sponge cake for various desserts.
