Why are Portuguese pale lagers trash, but their dark beers are *very nice*?

Because that's how they make them.
If you want a more detailed answer, I recommend asking a Portuguese brewer or ChatGPT.

Every country's "pale" anything seems to differ. Some are sweet, some are balanced, some are hoppier. It all depends on local taste and hops can be divisive. I had a "pale" African lager and it was horrible, but that tracks for most things from that area.

I thought their lagers weren’t too bad. Superbock was pretty good. It’s not a flavor bomb but you can find much worse beers.
