Gnocchi alla Sorrentina was one of the first Italian dishes to make use of tomatoes as well as potatoes.
Created in the 16th century to showcase these new ingredients from the Americas, Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is a dish of soft potato dumplings, served in a rich tomato and basil sauce, finished in the oven with mozzarella cheese.
Named after the town of Sorrento in which it was first prepared, it remains a popular dish across all of Italy to this day.
