I threw a Halloween jack-o-lantern into the backyard a while back, forgot about it, and now have a pumpkin plant that I occasionally make pies with. I also have wild native dewberry and strawberry plants that I like to pick before the squirrels and rabbits get to them.

I’m doing the same this year. They’re nice but for me the output didn’t justify the space and effort.

Peppers, tomato, dosakai and some herbs. I wanna grow hopniss and regrow my lovage after my plant died a few years ago but I haven't found a reliable source for either.

We grew squash one year but we have an abysmally tiny garden, 14ft×14ft and only half that is usable for grown. The squash took over everything. We already knew the flowers were edible but we started to eat the young leaves, too, just so that it wouldn't choke out our other veg. >>21431545
Bro, I'm not some rich dude. I've got my small-ass house with two fruit trees, one of which isn't even really mine as it's on the border between my property and the neighbour's but it mostly overhangs on my side (which is why half my garden is unusable).
I just was lucky and bought my house when I did because it's a decade later and it's now worth over 3× what was paid.

>NEXT YEAR
It's always next year until you actually do it. Even if you start now, late in the growing season, it's better than waiting for next year because it'll get you in the habit. Just plant something that's edible even without fruiting, like squashes or cucumbers.

Pro-tip: If you can, feed your plants rainwater only. They love it. Run a tube from your gutters to a container. An hour of heavy rain can collect 100 gallons easily. I use milk jugs and keep them in the basement where it's cool and dark because FYI rainwater does go bad. Your plants will thank you.

i just bought my house and i plan to grow some things. issue being, we have extreme weather in both major seasons so i'm not sure how to work around that. my original idea was to get some kind of greenhouse, but we had 70pmh winds last night so that's probably out of the question.

I have a bigass deck in the backyard the previous owners built for their hot tub. some of the planks are starting to lift because of the excessive heat, but i reckon i could stave it off if i put a bunch of planters on top. but again, the extreme weather will probably make this journey pointless. even my hanging planters all died because of the weather.

if there's anyone here that lives close to/near northeast Oklahoma or has any suggestions for extreme temps/weather and how to grow around it i'd love to hear it. we went from 95F and ball sweatingly hot yesterday to now i'm under a flood less than 12 hours later. the entire yard is underwater, but at least the deck is high enough to avoid it.

Basil will wither/wilt if you overwater it.
Basil will wither/wilt if you underwater it.
Basil will wither/wilt if it doesn't get enough sun.
Basil will wither/wilt if it gets too much sun.
Basically, it's a finicky bitch and sometimes, it just gets fed up with living. When I used to grow it, I'd taken to planting multiples away from one another. At least one would always die for no discernible reason.

They seem to look healthy and everything is coming along nicely but visually its such a shit show and nothing proper like that pic. I feel so retarded for not knowing how to properly maintain my garden and make it all look nice and neat :( but stuff is growing so I guess thats all that matters...

It's not really worth it except for herbs because the seedlings cost more than the actual item at the supermarket. It shouldn't be like that but it do.

Packet of a kajillion pepper seeds: $2
Single pepper seedling: $2
Single pepper: $2
A packet will grow a kajillion peppers, a single seedling will grow about a half dozen over its season and a single pepper is a single pepper.
In no universe is it cheaper to buy a vegetable than to grow it unless you live in Murmansk or Nouakchott or someplace like that.

The spinach and onions look pretty edible in that picture. There's a row of some kind of brassica, too. Though I'm not sure what it is, exactly, I can tell you that all brassica are edible. Marigolds are also edible. Can't really make out what the purple leaves in the planter bed are, but as I can't think of any plant grown for its botanical fruit (eggplants, tomatoes, Zachary Quinto) that isn't itself green, my guess is that those are also edible.
So the answer is in the front three rows of the planter bed, the back row of the planter bed and the back basket-pot of the decorative bicycle planter.

In communist Germany a vegetable seedling at a home depot type store costs 4-7€. Since you have to water the plants daily, buy soil/fertilizer and you lose a lot of produce to vermin, the final product costs you about 1,5-3,0x as much as buying the same vegetable organic at the supermarket. There's some exceptions such as certain pumpkin varieties, but you definitely lose money on average if you grow common items.
It's perfectly valid as a hobby but the notion that you can save on grocery costs with a home garden is absurd (spices and herbs excluded).
